my headlight use to only come on after the engine cranked over. Now the headlight comes on just by turning my key switch to on. What would cause me to loose that delay? shorted headlight relay?

Sounds like the relay. Should be easy enough to test.

Agreed. Unless someone re-wired it the headlight relay is stuck on.

My headlight also comes on with the key and turns off while cranking then comes back on when you release the button.

That's how it was designed to work. When you turn the key on, it sends power to the headlight. when you're cranking, your starter relay (not solenoid) breaks the connection to the headlight to allow more power to go to the starter. when you're done cranking, the relay releases and you get your headlight back.

Could be how a 700 and 750 works but on an XJ650 the light does not come on until the bike cranks...
