Hello Everyone,

I've been registered here for a short while, mostly lurking mode tho. Got myself a few questions and hopefully you guys got some answers!

I took the bike for a short ride from the gf to my place and halfway to the ride, and every time i was shifting, the oil light would come up. It only stays up WHILE shifting and at no other time.

The bike is due for an oil change which should happen this friday. Otherwise the bike has enough oil. Tho i wish they would have a dip stick or a BETTER way to tell how much there actually is. I never really trust that window much to be honest.

Regarding doing a shim job for a Maxim X, is there a really good walkthru for that bike? I wana do it but i gota admit i am pretty scared at the thought of messing something up.

I do have the XJCD as a side note.

Thanks,

Sen

Welcome Sen,

What bike do you have?

Is the oil light red? have a label?
Just checking because I was riding as crappy Honda recently and every time you pull the clutch in the neutral light comes on... I'd never seen this before.

and how fine IS it? The level should be right at or even a TAD above the top mark on the sight glass. The slight overfill is to keep the "oil" light from coming on during acceleration.

If the oil IS truly OK, you may need a new oil level sending unit, or there is (more likely) a problem with the related wiring.

Senadin,

I have an 86 Maxim-X and it doesn't have an oil light. If you are talking about the red light on the speedometer that's for low fuel. I have to hedge on this a little because the Canadian Maxim-X's were a little different versus those sold in the US but not much (mostly just 750 cc versus 700 in the US due to the "699" tariff on imported bikes). Check out this website www.maxim-x.com and you will see additional details.

???

I have an 85, and it most assuredly DOES have an oil light... just to the right of the ignition switch.

That's what I get for trying to answer a question with my attention divided between the forum and aligning the printer cartridges on my printer.

Never! Very Happy

There's that saying that someone (not sure if it's here or not) has in their sig: "I don't suffer from insanity. I enjoy every minute of it!"

The printer has an oil light? What won't they think of next?

Don't know about the shop labor costs, but I will say this: aircooled models are easier to do. Because they use the "shim over bucket" concept, all one has to do to get to the shims is remove the valve cover. On the X models, because the shims are located UNDER the buckets, it will be necessary to remove the camshafts as well. I'd hazard a guess that the biggest thing in that case would be making sure the camshafts are back in time.

I'm sure I will be doing this myself at some point in the future, but I'm not at the point where I should be checking valve clearances yet.
