I had an 82xj750. I never had an issue with the trans. As long as you shift a resonable foot you shouldn't have a problem. Some people have had issues with the plastic guide coming apart and lodging itself/gumming up the tranny but thats about it. I liked my 750 pretty well.

Tang, your sources are misinformed. The transmissions are very reliable. There is an issue with bikes that have been sitting for a while. The starter chain guide dries out and the plastic pieces break off and fall onto the transmission gears, locking them up. The repair is not impossible but requires the removal of the engine to do it right. It's a $20 part. I've had to pull my engine and do this repair so I'd say it isn't impossible. If you like what you see and the compression is 120 psi give or take, it sounds like a decent deal.

I agree, sounds like maybe some of your sources heard one story and applied it as a foregone conclusion to happen to ALL XJ's. I had an '81 Seca that I had bought in about '00 or '01 with 17,000 miles on the clock. It had sat without even being started for OVER 10 YEARS! Paid $250 for it, cleaned the carbs, sealed the tank, changed all of the fluids and had the brakes bled and new tires put on, and over the next four years put another 17,000 trouble free miles on top of the original 17,000! The most serious problem I had you ask? A (I think) $23 clutch cable that took me about five minutes to change at around 30,000 miles! Ended up selling it with just over 34,000 on it. Maybe I was lucky since mine had sat for so many years without starting, but proved it's reliablilty enough for me to buy my '83 "full dresser" Seca!

I have three 750 Maxims, None of mine have ever had any trans problems, I have had the same problems they all have like Fuse box problem where your just switch to something more reliable. Fork seals, Carb cleaning, Valve adjustments, Just routine maintenance. My 650 is a none YICS so it is alittle easier to Carb Sync. The 1100 has has clutch issues but I will have some aftermarket springs to install. That should help the slipping problem. If the compression is good and the bike is in good condition it should run along time with alittle TLC. Good Luck.

"Bigellis" you may get better luck if you put this post under the other motorcycle threads. That being said. Check youe cable adjustment. It may be way to tight. Can you feel it bump into gear when you put it into gear?
