Looking for some Suggestions of CHEAP mods... it has a 4 into one exhaust and i painted the bike including the engine. Flat Black and Hot Rod Red!!! It also has a few other stuff added to it.

I plan on replacing the square light with a 7" round one and putting on a small sport fairing with a windshield.

I also want to wrap the header with a natural or white wrap.

I also recently painted the engine a semi-gloss black, it looks awesome to me...

All right What do you guys think, did i do any good. Any suggestions ( I got new mirrors but i don't really like them, i'm looking for something retro, anyone know of anything.)

You had the pic locations wrong. I copied the links into my browser and then right clicked on the image and selected 'copy image location' then added the [IMG] at the ends.

Sweet, ill try that out next time i post pics, i have the headlight, and the fairing is coming in in a week or so... it'll cover the gauges from the front somewhat.

The only reasons why i don't replace the gauges is 1)money 2) I'm from Massachusetts and changing stuff like that screws up everything when it comes to titles and registrations and stuff, stupid Massachusetts...

I hear ya with the cash :(

Really? We are allowed to do whatever we want as long as we keep the frame without changing the VIN #. Your suppose to report mods to insurance, but no one ever does.

So today after working 10 Hours I decided to work on the XJ and change out the stock headlight.

^So this is what the light looks like stock... Just in case you haven't seen one.

^Nice and round, Just how I want it.

^Couple of wires inside of those headlights, and not so much room in the new light.

^Luckily I kinda think i might know what I am doing and I got all the wires together and taped up real nice like.

^Wanted to get a horn hidden inside the light so i decided to Epoxy it in there... I had to hold it like this for 20 minutes.

However it was getting late and I need to Fab up some nicer looking brackets for the light so I headed inside. I should be able to finish it up tomorrow.

That's what it was... 7min plastic epoxy, sets in seven minutes but the pieces can be moved within 20... it was a tight fit and kept pushing itself out, hence why i had to hold it.

Keep the pics coming! I would love to put a round headlight on mine but haven't done anything due to the wires!

Love the paint job! Is that stock?

I painted that myself, the guy who had the bike before me painted it gloss black but it was faded and chipping, so i did it myself.

That headlight looks crazy with all the wires but almost every connector is different and the ones that aren't are color coded... i just pulled them all out and put them back together and taped them up good.

ADVICE: use this stuff called varnished cambric to wrap your wires, it keeps the sticky black tape off all of the wires when that stuff gets hot and it makes it much easier to pull off the tape if you have to check/change some wiring. Then wrap it with 2 inch wide electrical tape... easier, faster, and looks nicer.

Thanx 4 posting those pics of all the wires hanging out. Gives me a pics 2 see what I'm getting myself into. 8O What bike is that round headlight off of? Also, I notice on ur bike. Right above the front fender. Theres a "bracket/brace"!?! My bike doesn't have that! Is that stock? or aftermarket?

    Thanx

The light is an after-market one i picked up on ebay, its actually a bulb and not a sealed beam which is what i was looking for.

The thing above the front fender is a fork brace, thats also an after-market part... It helps a lot with the fork flex, and bike doesn't wobble at all even at 100mph+. It supposedly helps with the handling and tire wear too.

Kaos- I actually didn't buy it. The person before me bought it. there are sight all over the place for those things. The older models are probably harder to get though.

    Update on Bike-

Well today i finished up those brackets. I made them out of aluminum scrap i had lying around.

^The paint took forever to dry... well it didn't take that long but i had nothing else to do.

^finished product. I'll take more pictures tomorrow, when i finished it was to dark to take any good ones.

Hopefully my fairing comes in soon so i can put that on. I'm also planning on changing the front turn signals once i get that also.

Can you add a pic of the tail light? It looks like you tucked the rear signal lights under the tail light. If you did how did you do it?

    Looking good!

Nice work so far! Have you tried the horn yet? Seems like it would be pretty quiet mounted inside the headlight can.

-another rainy day out, but it cleared up so i may run outside and snap some pics.

The horn actually faces down through the opening so it is almost as loud as stock, only thing is now i have only one horn instead of two like normal

^The Signals are actually bolted onto where the license plate light is.

^This is the finished bracket for the headlight, the hole above the back bolt is for turn signals once i put the fairing on which i am still waiting for.

^I thought this is a good overall picture of the whole bike after the headlight project.

I was thinking about it, but first I'm adding a front fairing to it, if it doesn't cover up the "super highly intelligent tachometer bucket on XJ's" or S.H.I.T.B.O.X. for short then i may replace it.

Looks good, I have done the same thing with my 750 although mine had the brackets already on the bike, but I had to Bind the back out to mount the light. I have the RH seris that had the full front fairing and hard saddle bags and a trunk. I have a question for you. How are you going to, or are you going to try and cover up the wires that are carefully taped up behind the light? My bike had a leather boot cover that I have wrapped around the wires for now but I want some way to cover/hide the wires. Also if you do replace the gauges and computer let me know what you go with because I really hate that S.H.I.T.B.O.X..Thanks.

I am waiting on my fairing to come in, I made sure those wires are taped up really good so no water can get in there then im just using zip-ties to hold the bundles in place, after the fairing is over it you would never be able to see the wires... I hope. Kinda just making this stuff up as i go, Hopefully it will look good once it's done.

Oh man, I just had to look down at my wrist and I saw the exact same band. :) I wish I would have seen that light when I put the one on my Seca. It is teardrop shaped in the back and required a lot more wire bundling/hiding than yours.

The wiring wasn't hard, its a three wire set up with ground, low, and high beam... all of the wires in the headlight have different connectors or color coding. Looked tough but ended up being easy. Its a bulb and not a sealed beam which is what i wanted. Only problem i had is that the whole thing is deeper than the stock light and i had to make a bracket for it. There should be pics on page two.

    Just a small update.

I decided since it was rainy out and it was going to be for a few days id work on the bike more. I wrapped the exhaust, used 50ft of 1 inch wide wrap and ran out before i could finish... turns out it was sunny and nice, but I'm not riding right now because of the headers. Meanwhile i was going to do a few things to the bike just had questions about it.

    1) If i get shorter shocks i want to remove the rear fender. not that i need to i think it'll look better though. I am sure I'm capable of this but are there any tricks or something i should look out for when doing this.

    2) Where is a good place to buy clip-ons? or i may make my own custom handlebars.

    3) Planning on doing some fiberglassing. again any secrets on that, never did it before but I'm confident I can do it. I paper mache a mean pinata.JK

So here are a few more things I've done.

    ^Wrapped my headers.

^Added this new windshield. Kinda has the Norton/cafe racer look

^In some other threads some people asked how you can tell what size engine you have. mine happens to be 748cc.

Hey, I'm thinking of adding a fairing to my Maxim - I saw hundreds (literally) of adds for that fairing on ebay. How easily did it attach, how much vibration is there, etc? Likes/dislikes? Thanks for any input you can provide...

As of "right now" I'm not a BIG fan of ur fairing/windshield... It looks "2 me" like it doesn't follow ur bikes lines.. But then again ur build isn't done yet!?!
