Maxim gauges instead of Seca's? I have the answer for you!

So I bought a set of maxim 650 gauges (nice shiny round ones) for my seca 750 (The gauges resemble a Pentium I sized computer bolted onto the front of the bike.). Pulled out my haynes manual and started to figure out which wires I should splice and which ones I can keep. After hours of work this is what I have... nothing... Switching all of those wires is not as easy as it sounded in my head. I opened up both speedos in front of me and stared them down till they gave me the answers...more staring... there it is!!!

The bulbs are the same socket... pull the bulbs above the tachometer and speedometer along with that sensor strip out of the fishfinder (seca 750 gauge) and put them into a nice shiny maxim gauges.

Then take off the B/Br/G "Tach" connector from your Atari system (again a 750 gauge) you decided to ditch. And screw them into the Black, Brown terminals respectively and instead of Orange terminal in the maxim gauges the Grey wire goes there (they go to the same place).

Now pull out your turn signal bulbs, the high beam bulb, and neutral light bulb. Neutral and High beam go in no problem. In my case however I had to combine the two turn signal bulbs into one because there is only one turn signal spot. I did this just by splicing the two together. Now your gauge is all set up minus the warning light "oil light" on the maxims.

If you wanna keep the little computer just hide it somewhere like under a side panel, under your seat, or I have seen a bike with one built into the headlight. Splice some wires onto the warning bulb socket to make it long enough to reach the gauges. Stick that socket in and your good to go... unless it's night time.

Your head light won't work just yet. You have two choices, either relocate the stock "computer" somewhere and extend the headlight plug all the way to the head light, or just look in a wiring diagram figure out which wires come from your head light switch and splice them directly to your headlight. Small note, If you relocate the computer and instead of extending the wires you just splice them bypassing the computer you will receive a constant warning light.

When I discovered how much easier this was I just had to get on the computer and tell everyone. I have yet to relocate the computer But I will save it and put it somewhere else. ill update you on how it turns out and I'll take some pictures of stuff too.

All the connectors I talk about in this post are from the original gauge cluster except on the end from the wire harness and not the gauge.

(Ground) Black wires are usually ground wires (with for some reason an exception to the positive wire from the battery, ask chacal about that one) so the Black from the headlight is easy enough just to attach to the Black from the 6-pin connector or anywhere you see a black ground wire.

(Low Beam) Green From 6-pin connector connected to Green/Red of Headlight.

(High Beam)Yellow from 4-Pin (gauge cluster) connected to Yellow/Green of headlight.

(Tail Light) Blue From 9-pin Connected to Blue/White in 9-pin connector.

(Brake Light) Green/Yellow from 6-pin connected to Yellow/White in 6-Pin Connector.

(Fuel Sensor) I eliminated it because I don’t have one in my new tank. And if you’re getting rid of the computer you won’t have a gauge for it anyways.

(Turn Light on gauge) The XJ750R has a left and right turn signal indicator light but the new gauges from a maxim 650 only have one light. Looks like it should work if I take the Dark green from one light and the Dark Brown from the other light and put them on each side of a bulb.

(Oil Level Sensor) I believe this needs a certain diode to work that is normally part of the computer. If someone else knew what this diode is exactly it would be great if someone could inform me on this because I would like to keep this function.

(Side Stand Switch) I plan on just getting rid of this. I’m not sure if it is a normally open or normally closed circuit so I don’t know if I could just jump it or just pull it out all together. There are some other threads on removing these.

If anyone could help with the Oil Sensor or Side Stand Switch that would be great.

I believe that covers everything when it comes to bypassing the computer. If I missed anything tell me, and if you have any questions feel free to PM me or just post them up here.

Re: Maxim gauges instead of Seca's? I have the answer for yo

That's good to know, thanks for posting it!
I never really liked the look of the "fish finder" unit myself, and thought it would just be so much easier to just go with the basics when I stripped mine down. I got so sick of going thru the flashing sequence everytime I started the engine (kinda like jumping in the drivers seat of the space shuttle) and wasn't amused by it's monitering capabilities what so ever.
Now I'm not trying to say this is for everyone (some like things as they are) but I look at things as the can be and say, "why not?"
Now I have just a speedometer, nuetral light, signal light indicators, and high beam indicator. There's enough wire on these bikes to re-wire your house and alot less easier just dealing with what I actually need to ride.

Thanks PaintIt(Flat)Black for the detailed info - will save me hours of wire tracing I'm sure!

the thing i noticed after the big gauges were gone is, they were blocking a fair amount of air at speed
if someone was good with Plexiglas it wouldn't take much to make a little windshield that attached right to the atari unit
