    Hey guys.
OK So finally got to my valves on my maxim.

Using Fitz's guide - got my valve cover off, side cover off ignition, got out my brand new 19mm box wrench and my new set of feeler gauges.

Started with intake, marking all my measurements down.
    All 4 are in spec!

.127 for left two cylinders, .14 for right two. (spec .11-.15)

Exhaust time. Started with left two again.
    (Spec is .16 to .20)
Left two valves were both .178, in spec.
    3rd Cylinder, same thing! sweet.

    This is goin' great!
Last valve. Somewhere between .127 to .14. That's tight!

So, that one has to come out to record it.
    But it won't.
I used the zip tie trick, worked great.
Shim bucket stayed right down, awesome!
    Now - the problem.
    I Can't get it out!

None of my tools are magnetic so that's a bonus. (yes I check them before I use them too!)

I tried 3-4 different things including 3 flatheads and an awl.
    It's in there good.

What's the trick to poppin' that bad boy out?

I want to get the # and get this ordered.
I could assume it's never been done which means its a 250, but, even if I were right... I'd still have to get it out! lol

Re: My Valve Specs & Can't get shim OUT!

What's the point if the zip tie works fine?
Are you suggesting maybe the bucket is not down far enough?

I have enough room to get the shim out, it just won't POP out.

Palmer650 and myself where having a time with this on his bike. We used a medium sized regular screwdriver to hold down the bucket and a small regular screwdriver to "pop" the shim out of the bucket and grab it with some hemostats.

    Got it!

Firstly, the bucket wasn't as FAR as I got it this time.
Instead of the folded over ziptie, I used the big fat head of it.

It was still in there REAL solid. I heard someone used tape and stuck it to a dry shim and popped it out. That was not the case here, REAL tight.
Had to use one driver to hold the bucket UP, and then a second wedged in twisting left right left to get it to ease its way out. I cut 2 scratches or so in the shim, but it's ok, and the bucket is fine.
Shim # is 270, and I measured 0.127~0.14 so going by the shim chart, I need to replace that Y270 with a Y265!

    Thank god! :)

    Wonder why there was a 270 in there, isn't stock a 250?
    PO went too far?

Should I leave the ziptie in place until I get the new shim, or not?
I will need to put the shim back in place to do that, and I don't want to fight getting it out again.

I'd put her back in if you wanna ride her until you get the new shims

Nah, it's too tight so I can't adjust my sync/colortune till then anyway.
I am taking this time to clean up and polish EVERYTHING, as well as do some electrical tidying (like my foglights) and even installing a clock/thermometer that has two zones so I can check my 'windchill' on the front wheel! hah.

No, the original sizes were whatever sizes were necessary to achieve the correct clearance.......just like you're doing now! They could be anywhere from 2.00mm to 3.20mm thick.
