If in the course of enjoying your bike, you decide to install pods, please leave the airbox in place so that the person fixing your mistakes after you are done with the bike - most likely because it just doesn't run right anymore, the next owner can restore it to working condition be reattaching the airbox and not going through the hell of having to drop the engine from the frame.

It is my hope that those who forgo this warning suffer the curse of Job, that all the powers of Heaven and Earth work to your greatest possible misery and suffering, and that this be a warning to all who foolishly contemplate removing the airbox. Even worse than the curse of Job, may your reproductive organs wither and die so that you cannot visit the curse of your stupidity on future generations.

Wow harsh, but I do agree with you, my 78 xs750 came without the air box or pods it had nothing, it sucked. Spending more money on a bike you just bought does not sit well with wife.

Sorry to tell you this, but mine has pods, but at least I have a bit of an excuse. When I got the bike the air box was smashed from where the PO had knocked it over. Since I did not feel like pulling the engine to but in another air box I went with pods instead. If I ever separate the motor from the frame I will probably put back in a stock air box.

    Help me with this.

I am in the process of making one 750 out of three, with the idea that it will be my sons bike. One of the bikes had pods, he found that it looked cool, so ok, we will put the pods on. Tonight I removed the stock airbox from the project bike and was going to pop in the new motor, old one had tranny trouble.

If I want to run with the pods, what else should I do with to the bike. Or is it just a bad idea and should stick with the stock airbox.

it will have a 4 into 1 exhaust system.

    Thanks

    Ken

You'll need to play alot with jetting. So see XJ4evers thread on carbs and you will see a starting point. It can be a real headache to get it right

There are two recent threads which discuss the use of pods. I suggest reading them.

    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... art=0.html

See the last page, about half way down, where the date makes a 2 week jump. He says that it was running fine and then put on pods and a different exhaust:
    http://www.xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic ... tml#146530

For those who may not have gotten this from the beginning, this was a rant to vent but at the same time I tried to do it humorously using an obviously extreme "curse". It's hard to covey such things at times in writing ...

It's not so bad...at least the frame has a removable section to make it easier.
OK, your right. It's a bitch of a job to slip in an airbox.
I know someone claimed that they got one in by removing the starter but I don't remember what model it was.

It's good practice to drop the engine anyway. While you have it apart, you can do some REALLY good detailing too!

I have to install a stock air box back in a 750 Maxim. I'm going to pull the carbs but don't think that will be enough. Maybe unbolt the engine and let it drop down alittle and then I think it might go.

I'm feeling your pain... I bought mine with Pods. I can't get my bike to run right.

I could easily maim the PO but I think our mother might get mad at me. After all it's her baby boy.

IIRC you may be OK with the 1100. I know the 550s for sure, and I believe the 650s require engine removal; not sure about the 750s, and like I said if I recall the 1100 doesn't require it.

Sorry for not responding, Oddball, for some reason, I overlooked your post.
I'll add to what Fitz said: You cannot remove insert an airbox into a 650, Maxim X, and I am pretty sure not the XJ750, without dropping the engine - unless you are willing to remove it in pieces.

Belle, I understand, you can't kill him or curse him, but you *CAN* make *him* reinstall an air box ... <grin>

psht yeah right. He's riding around on a mint Maxim that I helped finance by buying the Seca. He said the air box to the Seca was trashed and he threw it out. He said he rejetted for the new exhaust and to compensate for the Pods. (like he rebuilt the carbs in a few hours and made sure he had the enrichment circuit clean.. uh huh...) As of yet I haven't got the bike to run exactly right.

I did get an air box from motorcycle salvage but it wasn't the right one. Eventually I hope to find an air box and get things fixed.

I was able to get the airbox in my X by just removing the starter and carbs. Maybe I just got lucky.

Chacal, all I can say is "wow".

I had tried at one point to no avail. 'Course I didn't know to remove the battery box.

I tried that on an X, but still couldn't get it in. Did you remove the manifold intake boots too?

And was this an air cooled or a water cooled? I couldn't get around the coolent pipe that comes out of the bottom of the engine area and makes a bend to the right. That just stuck out too much.

Your brother did that to you? Curse him, the scoundrel!!

I'm sure glad the PO of my bike didn't mess with the carbs or the airbox.
