I'm looking for the swoosh sticker decal for the battery side cover. Not the whole cover, just the decal.

Anyone know of a source for that sticker?

chacal carries them. You can also find the same ones he carries, on line, for more money.

He says he doesn't have it. :(

I'm sorry I thought he did. Speed-n-Sport lists the whole package: http://216.168.60.165/speedandsportinc/index.tpl Just plug "XJ550" into the "decal search" box and there you go. Why they call it a "turbo" I have no idea, there was no such thing.

They also list just the RH stripe, Yamaha pn 4U8-2173F-20-00 NOS for $12.

They've also got the "Seca 550" (4U8-21781-00-00) badges too but they're ungawdly expensive ($74 ea.)

Somewhere, and I cannot find it, I saw somebody listing just the sidecover set separately.

Thanks Fitz. That's the best option I've got so far.

I guess I'll have to decide if I want to buy the entire kit for just the one side cover decal. I don't need any of the other parts right now, but maybe I will sometime in the future. I would assume that shipping would be the same on the whole kit, so I'm looking at $12 for the one decal and $60 for the entire kit...

Thankfully I don't need the "Seca 550" badge! That's pricy for a little piece of plastic!!

Thanks again for the tip, and if anyone else has other options, please let me know. I'm not in any awful hurry.

Here are my internal product notes on the 1982 550 Seca stripe kit made by Speed and Sport:

"NOT RIGHT DO NOT CARRY! SIDE COVER AND TAIL FAIRING STRIPES ARE WRONG (fairing stripe is correct)"

Hmmmm... That's interesting. I'm not sure how accurate that pic is from their website, but if you look at the side cover graphics compared to my original, the proportions do look wrong.

Kind of hard to tell, but mine appears to be fattest at the vertical section right at the bend and theirs appears to be fattest on the horizontal section. Also looks like the taper on the tail section of the original is a little more gradual?

Crap. So it seems that I'm still with no options other than painting it directly onto the cover?

They DO list NOS stock on just the RH stripe, Yamaha pn 4U8-2173F-20-00 NOS for $12. That's probably a Yamaha part and NOT part of their apparently incorrect kit.

Yeah, that's a good point. I bet you're right. Thanks.

And chacal, Thanks again for sharing your notes and catching me before I bought something that wasn't right. :)

You would think that with a NOS stripe to compare against, making the repro kit would be a no-brainer........

Reproduction Decals has the red stripe kit for the white '81 550 Seca. They will even let you buy individual bits of the kit. It might be worthwhile to contact them and see if they could do the later silver set for the red paint scheme. They also have the sidecover badges for $42.00 each. Still pricey but better than $74 each. They also have decals for the handlebar switches and key surround if you want to restore those.

For what it's worth, I had contacted the Speed and Sport people a while back about the set they have listed on ebay for $60 and they said they could do different colored versions of it for the same price.

    Hope this helps a bit...

    Thanks Tom,

I saw that website from another thread where someone was looking for a decal and I was disappointed to see that they didn't have my color. Not only that, but it appears that the design was changed in 82 as well.

Something seemingly so simple being so difficult?? I know... I know... Having no decal at all is surely more noticeable than having one with a slightly incorrect taper, right?

    Thanks again!

Yes, all three years of the 550 Seca side cover stripes are "similar but different". The front fairing and rear seat cowl panels stripes are the same pattern between all three years, just different colors of course (and yes, I know that '83's never came with the beloved fairing........!

I wouldn't worry about the taper being different on one side. You can only see one side of the bike at a time.

    Yeah, yeah, you're right...

But I'd know it doesn't match

I hear you! The only major, non-stock, item on my Seca is the exhaust. If I was to ever repaint the bike, I'd want all the proper decals too.

Very nice bike by the way!

This is my '82 Seca. Looks like a front fender and forks off an '81. Emblems and decals are all messed up too.

I'm currently working with a graphics guy in Canada to reproduce the decals for the '83 Seca 550, starting with the sidecover stripes. I managed to get my hands on an NOS left sidecover stripe still in its carboard sleeve (as in NOT FADED AT ALL) to work from. Stay tuned all you '83 owners.

The stripe package for the '81 is available from a few different sources.

It's not so much that the pattern is different from SIDE-TO-SIDE (I believe this is true on all of the model years; in other words, the right side is NOT a mirror image of the left side stripe), it's that the dimensions, thickness of the stripes, curvature, etc. (the "pattern") is different on all three years.....so for instance, a 1981 left side cover stripe is dimensionally NOT the same as either the 1982 or the 1983 left side cover stripe, etc.

That's why the template that S&S has for the 1981 stripe kit cannot produce the "correct" 1982 or 1983 side cover stripes, even if the correct ink colors for the 1982 or 1983 stripes WERE used..........

Right and left sidecover stripes ARE "mirrors" on the '82 and '83; the '81 had a "break" in the left stripe because it went right over the keyhole.

chacal is right in that the stripes for ALL 3 (US market years) were dimensionally different.
