Here I am starting to put the XJ project back together. I started running the wiring harness back into the bike and that's going pretty good, I'll have to change out the fuse panel and figure out how to squeeze everything into a smaller area but that's no biggie.
The problem I am running into is trying to figure out how to rewire the new hand controls to the harness...
Here's the schematic for the new controls here
And here's the schematic for my 82 xj750 here
I didn't post the pics directly because they are rather large... I sure would appreciate any help guys! Thanks!!

Hi Brian,
I may be able to help but I need the other page that coresponds with the schematic for your bike.

Those controls will changing the harness wiring for the turn signals and horn, and an additional signal flasher.
Of course you would lose the auto cancel.
Difficult to do in a post...... |
All true Carl. I don't mind making some changes to get the 'important' things to work... My thought was to throw the question out and work things out through pm's, emails, or hands-on help. Then when everything gets done I'll post the results here..

OK, Got everything wired up and plugged in on the bike.
Here's what the final harness schematic is looking like right now.
With this configuration everything works EXCEPT the start circuit. This current configuration has 2 disadvantages:
#1 I have to manually pulsate the turn signal
#2 The head/running light won't shut off during the starting of the bike.
The thing that has me confused is I went thru the start circuit test in the FAQS section and everything checks out fine. The start and run switches work when tested for continuity.. so the problem is not there...
As I understand the starter button wiring (see below) the R/Y and L/B circuit is closed when the button is not pushed, this circuit powers the lighting for head and running lights. When you push the start button, it OPENS the light circuit and CLOSES the start ciruit. So in theory I should be able to disconnect this plug from the harness and jumper the Black and L/W (blue with white stripe) wires on the on the bike side of the harness plug and when I turn the key on it should start cranking....correct?
But it doesn't.
I'll mess around some more tomorrow but I thought I would throw this out there and see if anyone has some ideas to test....
I did find a pic that shows my frame ground wire (which I had forgotten where it went). This is how it was before and I have it the same way now...
That strap just grounds the frame to the motor, and the motor is grounded to neg on the battery..correct??
p.s. I should also mention the side stand switch works properly and the trans is in neutral (light is on on the gauge cluster) and the clutch switch wires are wired together (closed circuit)....

don't worry too much about the ground strap the motor has lots of bolts that connect it to the frame
the link for the bike wiring is for a 700 not a xj750j, that could be a problem

Yeah I had noticed that too....but I'm hopin' the basics are the same...anyone have an 82 750 Maxim schematic they could cross reference for me?!?

SUCCESS!!! Sometimes it's the simplest things...
Went back out to the garage to start trouble shooting some more. I should mention that I had to switch some wires to make it match my latest posted schematic, mainly splicing the blue/black to the yellow/red and putting the black to the other side of the start button with the blue/white for that circuit.
turned on the key and the headlight worked as expected, but still no start. Started going through the start circuit test again, and found no continuity between the solenoid blue/white and ground.... Started checking voltages across various circuits and the best I could get was about 2v....Then I noticed the gauge cluster was not working things were going the wrong way in a hurry. Looked to me like a ground was missing. Checked motor to bat-neg, good continuity. Checked frame to neg- good....hmmm. Kill switch and start still had continuity....grrrr...As I sat there, looking at my nicely powder-coated frame , suddenly... I had ground the pc off where the grounds were mounted, except at the ignition coils. So I pulled them off , disced off the pc at the mounts, bolted 'em back on... VIOLA! start circuit works!
So if you want to mount some HD controls we now have a working schematic for the xj750 maxim at least. The only downside , like I said before, no flasher on the signals (do it manually w/your thumb) and the headlight stays on when hitting the start button. If someone has suggestions on how to get the flasher to work, I'll give it a go...

I think I have the haynes book at home for your bike I'll check when I get home.
With your volt meter do you have 12v at the starter button on the blue/white wire?
If no than continue back down the starter circuit testing for voltage before and after each component. They all must be closed before the button will work because its the last switch in circuit that completes the circuit to ground.
well I see it took me to long to write this up

I thought I would change the thread title to make it easier to find for future searches...
p.s. Thanks to lowlifexj who helped me out the schematic and got me about 95% of the way there!! THANKS James!
The final schematic is..

I took the existing XJ wiring harnesses for the RH and LH controls, cut off the switches, buttons etc. and wired them into the new controls. You'll see some wires with the LONG (color) indicator. These are circuits on the HD controls that had one power feed between two switches/buttons that needed to be separated and each one given it's own feed.
