    Hello folks!
I've spent a lot of time the last 2 days reading previous posts here and can't find the answer to my question. Close, but not exactly. I have the Haynes book here and I swear I've tried to make sense of these wiring drawings. I need some help.

The turn signals on my 82 Maxim turn on and stay on. I've spent the time and checked each one, cleaned any corrosion and charged up my battery; still they just stay on. Next on the list is the relay.

I've pulled the relay and took off the plastic covering and inspected it. It's a corroded mess. I want to replace it with a generic one. I don't want self cancelling turn signals, I want to turn them on and off manually at all times. So here are my questions:

    1. I've read about just replaceing this with a generic 2 prong auto store relay. Can someone show me a link to one so I know what I need?

    2. The old relay has 3 prongs marked C, B and L. Can someone tell me which 2 of these prongs would hook up to the generic one I want to buy?

Thank you! Hopefully, someone will throw me a bone here so I can finally feel comfortable riding this thing. I've attached an image of the 3 prongs on the old relay. (I think) :D

Yes, when I went through and checked them, I made sure they were all 1156 27w bulbs. I can't be sure about the last time they worked; I just bought it in the last few days.

There is a 3 prong flasher relay cheap at Autozone that will just plug in and (minus the auto cancelling) just work for a few bucks?

don't know , but any one will work , all you have to do is repostion the wires to the new one , eg:batt to batt and lights to lights .

repostion = cut wire to plug leaving plenty to work with and then swap them around and rejoin...

Thank you. That's the kinda help I needed. Now that I know B stands for battery and the L is for lights, I can at least go forward and see if I can solve this problem.

I plan to stop by the auto parts store tomorrow after work.

Ok , it sounds like you can tackle it.

    now you have some choices.

either get a 3 prong unit

    or a 2 prong unit

as the auto canceler will now not function "the C prong" , that is really not needed now or to be even connected hence a 2 prong flasher unit .

3 prong units are lights/battery and pilot light [little indicator flashing light in/on vehicle] , so as the pilot light is not needed either back to a 2 prong unit again.

maybe you could check the oriantation of the new 2 prong flasher unit's prongs [there might be different styles] and look at the way the original plug is wired and maybe you'll get a match so no have to cut wires at all.. good hunting...

Seedyrom, I'm interested in your dead relay. Would you want to be rid of it? I'm thinking I can rebuild it but I don't have one on my machine (P.O. replaced it with a two prong). I'll cover postage.

I have one sitting here and it still works , i fitted a electonik one as i no like the autocancle and prefered a faster flash rate robert.

I peeped inside after and found it was easy to alter the flah rate timing [a simple capacitor/resistor function] but as mention a autocancle would bug me.

I'm hoping to disassemble it and be able to rebuild them like Av8tor did with the TCI unit. It would be nice to be able to give everyone a shot at one place to fix theirs.

There ain't much in there robert , dirty points contacts or a capacitor drying out would be age symptoms , then apart from a short somewhere which would be a fault condition.

Sounds very simple. In practice, I've heard lots of folks are shy about popping the case open to attempt an overhaul. I'd like to create a how-to to encourage others to give it a shot before condeming the offending unit. You sound like you have a great deal of experience on this topic, how 'bout it?

    Success!!
Stopped buy Autozone during lunch today. I found a 2 terminal electric relay for $8.99 that just plugged right in and worked great. It's not marked exactly the same as the relay, it has an L (load) and X, which is the same as the B terminal on the old relay.

I took a picture of it. Maybe in the future it'll help someone else out.

While I was there, I picked up a switch. I installed it so I can manually turn the headlight off while I'm starting the bike. When the switch is off, it lights up the headlight indicator on the cluster in case I forget to turn it back on before riding.

By the way, Robert, PM me your address and I'll mail you the relay if you still want it.

    Thanks for everyone's help.

Yep, get to look at him in the mirror daily. I've got some work to do it's true. I've a deep-seated love for soldering and such, wouldn't mind doing it for a living. Of course, this sort of work isn't something you make a living at. Takes too long. So I'll do piece-meal jobs here and there as they present themselves. Any projects in particular your waiting to see from me Nooz?
