I have a question on the needles coming out of the pistons in the carbs on my 1885 700N Maxim. Do you screw these in a certain amount or just snug them down? Because I have one that seems to catch or stick when it is screwed in all the way. It also does not always point straight down. I am wondering if this is the reason I am not getting but about 35 mpg. It idles fine and throttles up fine but when I am at a steady speed it sounds like the carbs are running rough. Any help would be greatful.

It should be snug. The spring holds the needle down and should let the needle move a bit. If snugging the cap down locks the needle you need to see what's different from the other 3.

The Needles are Pressed-in until they seat.

Wrap the Jaws of Needle-nosed Vice Grips with Duct Tape, Leather or Multi-layers of Rubber Gloves to allow you to grasp the Needle firmly without causing the Needle any damage.

Set the Piston upon a Soft Wooden Dowel inserted into the Piston to steady the Needle Seat while Pressing the Needle down into the Seat.

Have an assistant hold the Piston upon the Dowel as you Very Lightly Tap the Pliers ... Pressing the Needle into is Seat.
The "Note" you hear as you light tap on the Tool will help you know when the Needle is fully seated.

    "Tink ... tink ... tink ... tunk"
The flat note indicates the needle is home.

After reinstalling the Needle ... Measure ALL to be of equal length after reseating.

Thanks! I will pull the carbs tomorrow to do that. I had pulled them off the bike a week ago and then had a death in the family. So for me and my wife to have away of going I did a very half a@@ job of cleaning and stuck them back on. That way she could drive my truck to see some of her family while we were in S.C. the week before Thanksgiving. I plan to pull them off and give them a thorough cleaning this time. But from what your saying and what I have seen I will probably have to do that to all 4. I will get back to you with the results.
