I had been storing my lawn service, boats and motorcycles at a friend's place in the country. 2 months ago I bought the 5 acres. Granted, none of this stuff was new, but most of it is gone now. From what I heard the neighbor had a small camp fire the night before. Today it flared up and went across his property. The 9 back-to-back freezes already had the grass brown and dry. Losses:
    2001 V-Star 1100
    Silver Wing
    Maxim 750
    Turbo bike (parts)
3 other parts bikes [seven bikes burnt]
3 boat motors, car motors, my hot rod parts,
3 commercial mowers, van, firebird, lots of spare parts.

I'm calling my lawyer tomorrow, and take pictures of the mess.
At least 2 acres are scorched.

No insurance, but the neighbor has a policy, and it was his fire.
    I'll know more soon.

Ouch that blows... Here in NH You will only have coverage on the bikes or boats if insured individually in a garage. Other than that you are screwed. My policy states no coverage for registered vehicles not individually insured.

    What B.S.

    Good luck man..

Thanks for all the support and kind words guys.
Talked to 2 attorneys. This goes against the neighbor's policy, the initial claim handled without an attorney. I have to list reasonable values for everything. I get replacement value for the 24 X 30 pole barn I built.
    Pics later today.

thats hard putting reasonable values on these bikes, they may look at ones for sale and say, that ones only 500 bucks, when your bike is probably worth 2000 or so since its been gone through and so on and so forth

Dig up any reciepts you have for add-ons you put on those bikes and other stuff you did to them that raises the value of them.

    Oh my God.
    What a shame.

You know, ... whatever number ... gets printed on the Insurance Company's check ... is going to look ... two or three zero's short when you see it!

    The photos are heartbreaking.
The loss as we see it, now, is inconceivable.
I'm glad it wasn't worse and no harm came to you or your family.

    Pete,

I hope everything turns out in your best interest with this. You must be heartbroken. If you need anything in the meantime let me know. If it got all of your bikes let me know and I will bring mine over so you can get a riding fix if you need it.

You know, five of the bikes could have been pushed to safety, if anyone had been thinking- -(save the horses!)- - they stood around and waited for the fire dept. to arrive. Today I talk to the Insurance adjuster.

The firemen saved the back corner of the shed where the Chevy parts, Holley carbs, and 2 boat motors are, however drenched, and now exposed.
If any of this stuff is salvagable it needs to be moved today to dry storage.
More pics to Schooter. . .

Some older Gold Wing guys had bought an auction wreck and fixed it up, then sold it to me under retail 3 years ago. It had a 205 R 60 rear tire, so it handled funny. I spent $250 having the bar-end turn signals professionally installed. The carb melted, so I'd say the motor is toast.

Of the 4 burned XJ's, I wonder if I have enough parts to throw together a "phoenix" rat bike??

Finally met the adjuster. Things are looking better, he suggested getting a POD to save any valuables, and photograph my losses as I tear into the shed., big shed. Due to the burn ban, the insurance may be generous, as there is already legal action.

Fingers crossed, of course. - - Pray for Haiti !!

Might want to look into your own insurance policy for the future. If it'd been a cigarette butt out a car window or tornado you'd have been screwed.

I had to drag everything out of the remains of the shed, photograph each item claimed, then research the replacement value.
    That took a while.

The claim was submitted 2 weeks ago. The 72 year old man was found guilty of negligence, and given a year probation, ordered restitution.
I am hoping for fair value.

And then, on a more personal note- - my Mother suddenly passed away.
I had been taking care of her. I spoke with her just 10 minutes earlier and she was fine. She is with my Father now.

    Sometimes it don't just rain.
    It pours.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved Mother.

    Find your Mother's star.
The new one, twinkling; amongst others not.
Perhaps they are not actually stars, but rather tiny openings in Heaven where the love of our lost ones shines through and signals down to us, to let us know they are are content, at peace and joyfully in the company of God!

FWIW, one year ago last month my sister-in-law's barn burned....total loss including all contents, antiques, etc..... no animals. Cause: she wa burning some trash, in the burning barrel, but never noticed the smoldering dry grass on the bottom edge behind the barrel. She went into the house to get a drink, turned around and the barn was fully engulfed. Happens quick.
Results- 10 months for the insurance adjusters to finally come up with a bottom line for her.

Back when I was in college, we lost our music department building to a fire, I lost all but one instrument, all of my textbooks, music filing cabinet, and everything else that I had in my practice room. It was my senior year so I had basically my whole future career stuff there. Early sunday am fire, building was still locked, no one was injured. Cause: squirrels in the wall chewing on electric cords to the pipe organ in the basement. Results: all students were reimbursed for losses, and compensated for instruments.

Hope that helps put your's into some other perspective.

WOW, My condolances. So much loss in such a short period. I am sure the loss of your Mother pales in comparison to the loss of your treasures but still two terrible events so close together.
