I have a 92 seca2 xj600 that needs a little work most of the repairs I can do pretty easy but there are a couple of some what big repairs. I took the starter off after I tested it and found that the idler gear has missing teeth. I know I hve to split the caseing apart to get to this gear but do I really have to work from the top down or can I work from the oil pan up. If so how would I go about this. I would like to think anyone with helpful advise.

If you read Wizards XJ900 project thread, he has cut part of the top of the casing away to gain access to the gear - not for the faint hearted!

Failing that, follow the manual (If it is listed?). I found a seca2/diversion Haynes manual to download for free at www.carlsalter.com

To split the cases on an XJ-series motor, including yours, you work from the bottom. You pull the motor, flip it over, and have at it.

If the top end is in good condition it is not even necessary to disassemble it; you can leave the head/jugs/pistons etc., right where they are and perform your repair.

GET A MANUAL. Failure to exactly follow the instructions for the application (and NOT application) of Yamabond (sealer) at certain critical points in the motor can cost you a blown mill the first time you spin it to 9 Grand.

Which gear exactly? You SURE you can't get to it from either side without splitting the cases?
