Backwards Battery Terminals?

So my problem is that I can't find a battery for my 1983 XJ750 that has the terminals in the correct orientation. I recently bought the bike used, and it has a very undersized battery in it, so in looking for a new one I've found that the 14L-a2 is the recommended battery. The problem is that the 14l-a2 has the positive terminal on the right, and I need it to be on the left. I can't seem to find a battery that has this set up and is a similar size (the plastic housing prevents me from moving up a size, and from flipping the battery around).
Any suggestions?

I just pick one up at Autozone last week. Walmart, Checker Auto and just about any bike shop should carry the correct batery.

 

the + should be on the right, could someone have changed the cables?

I too noticed alot of after market batteries have the polls reversed. Instead of going thru all the trouble trying to find another battery, I just reveresed the cables on mine. Now I have the option of using either kind of battery.
The only thing I had to do is use a little longer positive cable (off another one in the salvage yard) Or you can just make one with the right heavy gauge wire with the ends crimped and soldered on. Pretty simple.

 

Thanks for the insight guys. Hillsy, the 'housing' for my battery limits me to a battery with a height of 6.57", and the 14A-a2 is unfortunately 6.92" tall. PainterD, it looks like I might have to take the same route as you although I'm having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that I can't find a battery similar to the original one!

Mine just fits. I think it's about 1/4" higher than the original one so it's tight. As long as it fits that OK with me.

 

I'm in the same boat. I just picked up a new battery, same one as troy and the terminals are on the wrong side.

The terminals on the bike have not been reversed.

Anyway, I only checked the fit before i charged it. Anyone got a good solution for a retrofit?

 

On a suzuki that I have I bought the wrong battery with the terminals backwards. I just hooked it up and slid the battery in backwards.

 

My positive is on the left just for a data sample.

 

i think your right the book shows + on the left, somebody changed mine
but maybe more important than + - might be giving the vent tube a straight shot down and out
