It it common for a Maxim XJ650 to be difficult starting after relatively short rides?

I have gone for rides no longer than about an hour -- but through city traffic with all the inherent stop-and-go's. Then I parked the bike for about 20 minutes.

When I came back and tried to start up, it was difficult. At one point, all I was getting was a 'click' upon pressing the starter button. I waited for a few minutes and tried again. Eventually it did start but it isn't the first time something similar has happened.

I know the bike is a cruiser and not best-suited for city driving but I am wary about riding to do errands when I have to return soon.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
