i got the 900r out from under the winter storage blankets and stuff this afternoon, primed the carbs, set the choke and away we go!!!

it ran crappy (the carbs are a bit gummy from last year) so added a little bit of fresh gas and some seafoam and let it idle for a while and an occasional run up and down the street...

still wont let me twist with reckless abandon but requires slow methodical application of the go grip. as i was getting ready to put it away for the evening it started to spit raw gas at me from i THINK under the airbox 'manifold'...

the petcock is NOT still on prime but on run. hmmmm....

Sounds like you have a petcock and float issue on one or more carbs. Plenty of previous threads on fixing petcocks. Beware you may have a sump full of gas mixed with your oil now and this should be investigated/sorted before further engiune starts!

Also check the float valve o-rings if you have the carbs apart.. They can cause leaks and over flows....

Could also just be a seized float valve not shutting off... If it is either of these, then gas will stop leaking when engine stops... If not then look to the petcock

Check the oil level glass. Also, pull the oil filler plug and smell the crankcase. It better smell just like oil. If there's the hint (or blatant smell) of gas, you've got a leaky petcock, a leaky needle/seat/float, and the gas is seeping down (or pouring down) into the oil. You'll have to flush that, too.

Everything was just serviced last season, and YOU didn't use Sta-Bil when you put it away last fall.

    Stuck float, betcha.

Try this: Leave petcock in "ON", motor off, open carb drain screws, let carbs drain. Make sure you have plenty of rags under there, and once they've drained, put the petcock on PRI until fuel begins to pour out of the drains. Put petcock back to ON and wait for fuel to stop.

(This is a good test of your petcock along the way.)

Leave drains open, and VIOLENTLY bounce the bike. Throw it on and off the centerstand a few times; bounce it around good. (What we're trying to accomplish is "flapping" the floats up and down a bit.)

Close the drains, put petcock on PRI and watch for leaking fuel.

It worked for me when my '81 did that this past spring.

If not, then it's carb re-cleaning time.

Either way, be sure to check for gas in the oil, depending on how much fuel got "dumped" you may or may not have started filling the sump.

Yeah I had a THOROUGH carb rebuild done last year. I'm quite certain its a stuck float. Good procedure for "shaking the loose" Brian...

I've been riding my '01 ZRX all summer and the XJs have been neglected...
