Rubber Intake Manifold - Carb to Head

I took off my carbs today to start cleaning them and everything but realized the rubber boots that go from the carbs to the engine are toast.... im going to try and see if the rtv and inner tube trick works but they are cracked all the way through in many places.... i was wondering where i could buy them, new or used. and what years and what engine sizes will fit my 1982 xj650
will boots from an 83 xj750 fit? or a 550? im in college and i got the bike for free so 250 for new parts for an old bike isnt really worth it....

 

Chacal (on this site) sells pretty much every part for these bikes. Click the "XJ4Ever" icon in the top right of the page to go to his catalog, then you can pm him and say what you need. You'll do a lot more searching and probably pay a lot more if you try to go anywhere else

 

he sells them for around 60 a piece if i understand right.... i can find others for other years for much much much cheaper but it's gotta fit.... i have ones for a 83 xj 750 i could get that should fit but i wanted to double check!

 

Look through the parts for sale section on this board. Even better make a post looking for some. You'll find a set within your budget.

 

I´d say go for the RTV/inner tube repair; without knowing the details, if you clean up everythinh really well and find the right Rtv/tube, you´ll have a fair chance of making a ceap repair that works.

Water thin CA (super glue) in the cracks to glue them back together. Then paint them with Liquid Tape (liquid electrical tape) - can get it at Walmart in either spray or brush on. The liquid tape is not affected by gasoline where RTV is.

 

black electrical tape. OR permatex #2. something to that effect

all you want is to seal the cracks. either method should get you by long enough till you get around to replacing them.

both sold at any auto parts store.

i used permatex. it last 2 summers for me before cracking again. that was on my first bike i had back in the 1800's.

 

Until you get the New ones:

Be creative with the Dual Syringe Pack of BLACK 5-Minute Epoxy.
After the Epoxy CURES,
Sand-down the Epoxy with Plumbers Strip Sanding Paper for shining-up copper tuning.
(It cuts the Epoxy very well.)

Next:
Use Black Liquid Electrical Tape.
Cut-off the Dabber on the Top of the can.
Get some Kiddie "Paint by Numbers Brushes -- 8 Pack

Stick a Pencil into the Can of Liquid Electrical Tape.
Let the stuff drip onto a 3X5 Card.
Get a pool about the size of a Quarter.
Paint the Manifold with the Electrical Tape.
When the load on the 3X5 Card dries-up ... throw it and the brush out.

Start a new Card and Brush.
Cover Epoxy ... Let dry. DRY <-- !!!
Sand with 380 or 400 ... loose the "Wrinkles"

Finish up:
Black Nail Polish.
Sane deal as before.
Det rid of the Bottle Top Brush.
Use an artists brush.

Pour 5 or 6 drops into a crease of a folded 3X5 Card.
Lay on the Black Nail Polish and QUIT the load BEFORE it PULLS.
Do a new load.
Shoot the Brush Tip with Carb Cleaner and you can use the same Brush.

Make 'em as pretty as you want.
She's your baby.

Air tight repair.
Rubber coated sealant.
Beautified.

(( But the Nail Polish that in the CLOSE OUT Rack. If you see a "Nice Color" buy that too. Put Nail Polish "Color" on:

Brake Caliper Mounts
Seat Rail Crooves
The Ball on the ebd of the Kickstand.
Raised Lettering
You name it ... I've put Nail Polish on it.
