In your bikes tailpipe that is.

Here's the story that you can benefit from as told by Stan:
Picture your bikes nice cozy collection chamber with its'
convenient entry access, add one very imaginative mouse,
    named Stan,

throw in a few dozen acorns.

wait for the unsuspecting owner to fire it up after
a long winter, watch with excitement as he tries
to figure out why its sputtering and coughing,
get really excited as you see a nice column of smoke
billowing from the tailpipes, smack your lips as
the smell of ROASTED acorns drifts your way,
jump up and down with joy as they are one by one
spit out the tailpipe, take careful note as he picks
them up and puts them in a bag and places them
on a shelf, wait for night when all is calm and begin
extracting your prize on by one, feel a little panic
as he unexpectedly returns, discovers your handy
work and removes them from your sight forever,
give thanks that you got at least 2/3rds of them,
and hope to goodness he doesn't ever do this :

Moral of the story: All you XJ'ers when it's time to store it, 'Put a cork in it'!

I've had a couple barn finds when started up, pelted my pickup with acorns...Things were all over the driveway.

My XJ spent its first winter in the barn. Darn squirrels packed it full of black walnuts.

Fortunately walnuts will not fit into the exhaust opening.........

That's funny...years ago we used to stuff marshmallows into mufflers of .unsuspecting owners of dirt bikes....It was hilarious ,every time they would change gears it would spit out a marshmallow, sometimes on fire!! Funny as h@#l
Not useful info, but this post just made me think of the old days.

My XJ spent 12 years I know of in a barn. When I finally got it started...out blew nesting material !!! Really !!! I think the mouse urine drained into the collector...it was rusted out miserably.

I think I'd go with aluminum screen made out of an old screen door or pick up new stuff at the hardware store for cheap. Sealing it with a cork for one will probably get chewed by a determined rodent and if not seal in any moisture formed by temperature changes over the storage period. Where as the screen may not be to their taste and still allow air flow so that moisture does not accumulate in the pipe which may lead to premature rusting.
Also, fogging the inside with wd-40 or whatever you choose may help displace any moisture that may start to accumulate. It may smoke like a two stroke for a while, but at least it may be rodent proof.
    Just sayin.

I've learned long ago to just use moth pellets around the bike on the floor to keep all those pesky varmits from gettingnear my bikes. It works very well to keep them outof my shop too. Don't need no stinking corks!

Went out and took a couple of pics of my solution. All I did was shape a piece of screen so that it fits just inside the opening.
No critters, debris and allows the can to breathe instead of possibly trapping moisture.

    Hi Al,
The pipe is a Hindle exhaust system I bought many years ago.
The "Can" in the picture is the "Full Race" version, in other words, it's extremely LOUD! 8O
When I bought the system I asked the guy about the "Can", he told me that for "Street" use he would recommend the "Stealth" can as it is much quieter, but at the time I was going through my "LOUD AND OBNOXIOUS" phase!
I wish I would have got the "Stealth" back then, but, live and learn I guess.
    Here's a better pic:

A wad of steel wool stuffed in the end would keep the rodents out.
