    S-l-o-w!!!

I have never seen it like this.
I usually come to the site when I get an Email notification.

The process involves opening the Email and clicking on the Link.
NORMALLY, ... Clicking on the LINK takes me right to the site.

    Recently, ...
It's been a long wait for the XJ Forum to open.
    Sometimes 15 -to- 20 seconds.
    Very strange.

Does this mean that there is a Virus or the Site has been hacked?

I had to reboot the server couple of times so that might be when it timed out. Yes, I know it's frustrating and I'm investigating this issue. I will keep you posted...

Well, when the post went live, I noticed there were about a dozen or so users and no less than *ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY* "guests".

I don't know if that's the cause or a symptom, but I thought it worthy of mention. The home page was a bit slow to come up when I logged in, but it seems okay as I'm typing -- with six users and fourteen guests.

Out of blatant curiosity, what kind of hardware is this site running on? Is it a dedicated system, or are we sharing cpu load with someone else?

under "who is here" "visitors" sometimes you see home page or private messages, if i click a visitor home page sometimes i get somebody's home page sometime i get logged out
should a visitor be able to get anywhere but forum's ?

Yes, this website is running on a dedicated server. This is by far the biggest site on it...

I made many changes but nothing has made any significant improvements. Recently I turned "off" the Calendar and I'm noticing faster page loads. Apparently some bots crawl them 30yrs out. That is a problem.... Still digging...

Yes, I got some reports about this already. I tightened up the site security because of recent loads on the server. Please try again and let me know if it works.

    Mobile loading working again

It does seem a little fast on phone

Is there an option to turn off recent post scroll?

That (and necessary ads) seem to make mobile loading sluggish

While researching that are you considering a mobile/iphone friendly layout (or how ever sites work for pc and mobile at the same time)?

    Thanks for the improvements regardless

If it's a dedicated server, it should be the ONLY site on it, IMNSHO.

In any event, the site is indeed much faster now; I never used the calendar function, so I won't miss it. :)

Now we need to get you to come down south for a visit somewhere. Hell, if a Canadian can fly all the way down to Texas to drop off a cat and have it turn into a roadshow, then you can come down this way and swing by a carb clinic or three.

Quick update: while not as slow as before, there was a bit of delay logging in and getting some pages to display. Again, I noted the number of "visitors" -- in three clicks, they jumped from 70-something up to 110. It's dropped back to 85 as I type, but I've got my doubts as to whether those are legitimate users -- most are listed as being in the forums, but some are at Home, or My Account. (Why would someone who's not logged in be on the My Account page?)

I'm wondering how many of these connections are coming through proxies -- maybe someone's being... "difficult".

Hey, Sno -- is this your hardware in the server box, or theirs? If yours, what's inside it? Maybe it's time for a wee bit of an upgrade.

I'm still investigating this issue. I have a feeling that the site gets hit with webcrawlers and that adds to the site load.

The Account profiles are accessible to all visitors when they click on "Profile" button in the forum post.... I'll check if this can be changed so only Registered users can access that info.

The server is being leased in TX and I don't have physical access to it. Server infrastructure upgrade = more money (increased monthly costs). In order to do that the site will need to offer paid services to generate income to pay for the monthly expenses. I'm already planning on upgrading to a commercial software in the near future. I would like to get some custom programing done so we have new functionality on the site. That also will cost $.

So, as the end user "What services would you be willing to pay for and how much ($5, $6.50, $7.50, $9.00... per month)?" I want to keep the free forum access to everyone so if you choose not to pay for the Optional services then you simply will have the Basic free account. I've seen sites where Paying Members have access to 'Private Forums', more PM space, bigger avatar, bigger gallery space, Supporting Member recognition under your Nickname, Garage etc etc... I'm all ears.

Bigger gallery space would be nice. Garage feature would be kinda cool. And who doesn't like recognition for their small part in keeping our bikes on the road? All features worth a small "membership fee" in my opinion. Paypal for payments of the fee would be convenient also.

    Gee, ya think? :p

You're saying it'd cost more to rent a beefier box? Makes sense, but here's the next question: do they host user-supplied boxes? I'm a cheap bastage, and probably wouldn't want to shell out for forum access, but I might be inclined to kick some hardware in your direction. Hell, I could assemble the box from parts. What OS are we dealing with here?

It not just this site. I have been having problems with the amazon cloudnet, and other sites as well.

I have had to reboot twice due to connection problems. It appears that someone might be trying a denial of service attack on the networks.

Anyone else getting "database error" when accessing site?

    Hi Guys

I seem to be getting this "database error" message quite frequently lately. Sometimes I have to refresh many, many times before I can connect. Anyone else having this happen?

In the last hour or two for me page loading has improved from eternal to quite slow, with the odd database error now and again.

I don't realize how much I rely on and use this site until it goes down!!

I hope it can stay free, or maybe the new server can add features that would be worth paying for. Someone's gotta be paying something somewhere...
