Just went to gas up the bike and forgot to put it in N before i started it back and the oil light came on so I just pulled in the clutch and fired it up and the oil light flicked as it started and didn't come on anymore, is that normal, no oil leaks that I know of. Its the Maxim by the way.

If it came on when you just turned the key on, that's fine. It should go out when you start the bike. If the light is coming on for any reason after that, check your oil level.

When was the last time the oil was changed? You may need to change a dirty filter.

Sometimes the oil leve sensor gets a bit dirty and can act funny. Mine used to have the oil light come on when going up steep steep hills when otherwise there's no issue. Took me awhile to get used to that...

If nothing else, you may need to replace a faulty sending unit.

BUT.....start with the simple things first....check oil level.

One other thing that will make the oil light come on. If the starter button sticks after the bike starts the oil light will come on and stay on until the starter button releases. My guess is its seeing a ground that it would not normally see.

The starter inhibit relay locks out the starter if either the neutral switch or the clutch switch is not made. This is obvious enough, the purpose of these switches is to prevent the bike from being started in gear.

What's not so obvious and is not referred to in the manual is the diode connection between the starter ground circuit and the oil level indicating circuit. You are right Wingnut, this is the ground it does not normally see.

The way this is wired cannot prevent the bike starting if the oil level is low but it will provide a ground circuit for the oil level light while the starter is being cranked, and in this way lets you know the oil level indicator bulb is still working ok. It appears to be designed to be on during cranking, regardless of the condition of your oil level and to go off if the oil level is ok after the starter is released, so it appears to be functioning normally. There is a resistor in the oil lamp circuit and this appears to be there to limit the current drawn so the starter relay still gets adequate current to operate.

This is how the circuit design appears to me, IMHO. If anyone has any further information on this indicator lamp subject please "illuminate" me, LOL
