Here're a couple of quickies that will apply pretty much to only my fellow Seca 550 owners:

-Wanna drop about 300rpm or so at highway speed (or pick up a few mph at the same "R's" you're used to running at?)

Run a 4.00-18 rear tire. Plus it just "looks right." Downside? Only certain manufacturers offer them anymore. Upside: AVON is one of them., as is Dunlop.

This one applies to the Maxim guys too--

-Don't adjust your drive chain to the 35mm~40mm spec; that's too tight.

If you run the drive chain at 40mm~45mm when you adjust it, you'll get right around 1000 miles between adjustments, provided you keep the chain clean and lube it every 300 miles or so. I use PJ1 Blue Label, Len carries it.

    Back to just Secas:

THIS THING: http://xjbikes.com/Forums/viewtopic/t=31872.html is confirmed to be a North-American market only device; can you say emissions band-aid? Since it sucks air IN, my theory (based on its location right below the crankcase vent input fitting) is that it's there to "poof" fresh air into (and thereby dilute) whatever effluage is coming in via the vent.

I plan to remove and plug mine on one bike; but on the "as stock as possible" bike, I'm gonna stick with maintaining the filter as in the article.

The XJ550s sold in the rest of the world, that all look like Secas, don't have it. Nor do 550 Maxims.

-Ride at night and boy, would it be nice to SEE the gas gauge and voltmeter?

Replace the instrument backlight bulbs with 5-element SuperBrite LEDs. I DO NOT recommend replacing the flasher or other indicator lamps with these, they're too horribly bright (I tried it.)

    And for everyone:

-Ride at night and want to SEE the road?

The Hella Euro spec H4 headlight that XJ4Ever offers is downright amazing, not expensive and worth every penny. Highly recommended.
