    Hey!

So my speedo cable broke a few days ago. :(

I ordered a new one and it's on the way, but I'm planning to do some traveling before then.

If you guys could help me with a speed/gear/rpm guide, That would be much appreciated. I have somewhat of a "feel" for speed and can kinda remember at what rpms which speeds are, but cant really for sure.

So if you could fill out the following, that would be of much help.

My bike is an 83 750 maxim.

If you only know a few, just fill in what you do know.

Most important i guess is the 55/60 and 65/70 mph in 4 and 5th.

I've never had a very accurate speedo on my bike, I'm on my second one and it reads slower than I'm going (I also had to replace the drive clutch at the hub, or whatever it's called, at one point)

But, having said that, the general rule on my bike is "five will get you six" As in, five thousand rpm in high gear is 60 mph, or close to it.

If you really need to know your speed you could try a couple things other than rpm conversion.

GPS is a good one, I've used these for a lot of things, including getting speed on a boat. Bicycle speedometers have been recommended, I tried one on my bike, but couldn't find a good way to attach the magnet to the wheel and have it read correctly. I even have a speedometer app on my Android phone, that works off gps, but it uses a lot of data. One cool thing it does is show your top speed for a trip, I think it can do 0-60 times too.

This isn't the one that I have, but it looks like the highest rated one, I'm telling you, smart phones are the coolest. (I also have the entire Haynes manual on my phone, I'm not kidding)

    Honestly, I skipped the posts.

My .02 is to follow the pace of traffic as much as possible and go slow when there is none. Youll likely do better that way than trying to remember all the speeds in gear at a given rpm. Thats more work and focus than just going with the flow.

Good Luck until then fellow rider and trust your instinct.

    Ahh!! Thank you maximike!

Totallllly slipped my mind the idea of a gps!

I bike race competitively and my bike computer is gps-tracked so I can pull up where I rode on the computer along with all sorts of cool info at any point in the ride, etc.

Anyway, I just figure out how to mount it to the bars and set it so it would only display speed, distance, and max speed just for fun!

So thanks for the suggestion, this will tie me over till the cable gets here, and also finally get to know how fast I actually can go ;)

I know I probably could have gone without and just went long with traffic, but just the THOUGHT of getting a ticket because of something so silly as not knowing how fast i was going sounds bad to me, lol.
