my "i want a bobber, but still want to ride two up" project

so like the title says... i wanted a custom cut up bobber done by me, but i also still want to be able to ride two up. so i shortened her a little... gonna use a removeable pillion pad like a lot of people use on harley sporsters

this is what it looked like fully assembled.


this is what it looks like now. im not done and have to mount the rear fender and seat, and im sure sort through a few electronics, but i have a little bit before my motor comes back home anyway.








i was wondering if anyone had done the "minimal wiring" thing, and found a way to still use the dummy lights. and if either the clutch start switch or the kickstand switch can still be used?

Is that just the stock rear fender slammed forward?

 

no, it is a stock fender, just not exactly sure what its for. and yea moved forward since the original fender mounts are gone.

 

My old 650 was setup very similar to this.



You can do whatever you want with the wiring. The dummy lights just get a signal from a sensor (which typically is just a switch that completes the circuit to ground).

ive been looking around and cant find any cool rear sets for this thing. anybody got any one theirs? im also having a real problem finding a gas cap. anyone ever done a weld in bung with twist on cap?

 

Rear sets will have to be custom made. You'll need to do some rear brake modifications if you plan on putting the footpeg farther back than the stock brake linkage pivot.

There's a ton of weld-in bungs out there. I don't have the equipment to weld sheet metal, so I always just use stock caps. If I get rid of a keyed ignition switch, I'll make a knob from a spare key that just stays in the gas cap so I can fill 'er up. This one was made from an old anodized barend weight.

looks like your going to clean up the bars, here's a quick and dirty for the key switch, the holes line right up but put the motor in first

 

If you want to see another approach to a bobber that can go back to two-up riding, go to my gallery and take a look at my xj700 airhead bobber. I call it a 'pseudo-bob' because I can put it back to factory bone-stock in about 45 minutes. There is not a SINGLE original part of the bike that has been cut or permanently modified. EVERYthing that has been done is 100% reversible. The only thing I don't have on in this picture is the set of forward controls. (That's because I haven't finished them yet, and they will also be 'reversible')

Does that key switch move to the frame under the triple tree? In front of the motor near where the front tire is? I'm not going to run a fender so I wonder if that would throw too much debri at the lock cylinder...

 

That and since I don't have a kill switch I would have to reach under there to turn it off. However, if that is how yours is, share an opinion!

 

Why no kill switch? You can get a small push button switch (like on dirt bikes) that will fit on the handlebars and not be very noticeable. Look at the pic of my bike couple posts above - I've got one on each side - right is kill, left is horn. I even drilled my bars and ran the wires through the bars - exiting in the middle between the clamps, so you don't notice any electrics on the bars until you look close.

BTW - I'm digging the front master cylinder and the High Life cruise control. I saw a writeup on how to do that at one time, but don't remember the specifics.

 

I found the cruise control in chopcult. Primarily American bikes, but tons of great ideas. Oh and I couldn't see the switch in your picture. Which I guess proves your point haha. I like the price of that switch too! You got a better picture you can share?

Did a temporary move of the switch. Kinda likin it. Also make the plate to pit my turn signals in. One of those times when I wish I had more tools.

 

@ earz- So you posted the "oh sh!t" speedometer? Classic man, wish I had some people closer by that like making the bike they own, "Their bike"

Looks great. Hardly noticed them.

 

I hooked em for a second off the battery. They are BRIGHT. 3 LEDs in each. Ordered me a kill switch too. Still waiting for my brother to get done with the motor...

 

got my motor in it today!!! carbs rebuilt. just got a little bit of wiring to do and have to bolt up the exhaust and put the carbs on it. then of course get her situated. wish me luck guys.

 

Well had her where she would fire right up. But I still have a little wiring to do. But this is pretty much how she will end up. Give me some feedback.

Haha. I have a bigger fender I can swap to and add a little pillion seat. Hopefully in the next few days I can take it downtown and take some real pictures of it.

I changed it up a bit, had a problem with everything being in the metal ammo box....
I think I'm still going to paint the shovel fender, but I'll probably wait until I paint the motor.







Anyone know what style of bike this is? I know it's a rat style, but other than that I'm kinda unsure.

I never thought about using them as side covers, I do have some metal grates I have thought about using for it. I kind of like it open though.

How does it run with the air filter set up you have? What did you have to do to make it run right? I like that look much better than the ginormous air box thing.

I am getting pod filters for my Maxim soon... and I am also getting a set of dyno jets (100$) to make it run properly...

@ xjrida- get to working on it! And let me see your progress. If I had to do it again I could make and stock maxim look like that for less than 150 bucks.

And about the intake, it runs fine. Plugs look great. And the jets in the carbs are 195 and 50s. I never had a factory air box on it so I can compare, but it pulls good past 9, picks up the front wheel and the rear like coming loose at about 5. Built her out of 10 bucks worth of PVC and a single pod filter. If you guys want more pics of it let me know.

 

Pretty soon I'm hoping to build a tail section like a cafe racer that will match the tank. Be great for storage and extend the frame enough for saddle bags for those long trips.

How could you have done this to a stock Maxim for -$150? Not doubting just wanting to know how to go about it.

Probably the biggest cost is the tail light. Mine was a gift but I think thy are about 45+

So without the tail light that's get me to an ESTIMATED 128 bucks

And fitz: I plan on building a 8 or so inch frame and fit a smeller tube in it so it fits tight, for strength, and then have it bolt on so it won't go anywhere, and build a fiberglass tail on that, and put a much bigger tail light in that... Make it much safe for the long hauls. And the shape of it will match the lower part of the tank.
