I didn't really feel like shelling out the money for the actual synchro tool.

    So, I got the following:

    1 aluminum yardstick
1 roll of clear tubing (smallest size Home Depot sells)
2 vacuum restrictors by Motormite from a local parts store
    2 lengths of vacuum hose
    Some clear 3M tape
    A little transmission fluid

    The result was this:

Then I used it to synch the carbs on the FJ. Before I needed lots of fiddling with choke and on a hot day in traffic idle would hit 2000 RPM, or even higher.

After the synch the idle is this:

    1 aluminum yardstick - $2.99
1 roll of clear tubing (smallest size Home Depot sells) - $2.25
2 vacuum restrictors by Motormite from a local parts store - $1.99 each
2 lengths of vacuum hose - $3 or so
Some clear 3M tape - had laying around
A little transmission fluid - had laying around

    All in all about $15.

I did make one of my own for four carbs at a time:

Of course, every tube has its home made restrictor (Rick's model):

Haven't had the time to use it though.

It seems you got a real improvement in you idle speed, does it go down quickly when you give the throttle a twist and then release it?

Yes. The motor is very responsive now, both spinning up and spinning down.

I also have a lot less vibration overall.

I actually spent some time in traffic yesterday and after sitting a while it does get a little higher, just a hair over the 1000 mark, but not any more than that.

You sure it's not supposed to idle at 1050, or 1100rpm?

    The 550s idle at 1200rpm; the 650/750s at 1050.

    Possibly;

    -valves in spec?
-carbs totally completely clean and rubber parts replaced?
    -float levels accurately wet-set?
    -good accurate bench sync?

    Then yes.

My idle wasn't really wandering, it was steadily climbing and staying high.

If it wanders, you may have more than one thing going there.
