Just got my new seal and gasket set from chacal yesterday. I Got everything apart and cleaned up last night & I'm going to put it back together tonight. Just wondering if there is anything special I should look out for when putting it back together (alignment, etc.).

    Thanks guys!

Re: Any tips on replacing shift shaft seal & gaskets?

I'll take that as a no....

Here's my experience, for what it's worth:

Not a bad job, pretty self explanatory but that (presumably) 30 year old gasket was a BASTARD to get off. Best to get some spray-on gasket remover or whatever and let it soak for awhile.

This may sound stupid to those with more experience but - I should've drained the oil first. I've never been in there before and for some reason thought there would only be a small amount of oil leakage when I removed the shifter cover - wrong. It all dumped and caught me a little off guard.

Finally, I ordered my parts through XJ4Ever (Chacal) and he was very helpful, fast delivery, etc. Everything I've come to expect and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend XJ4ever to anyone. The parts catalog recommends to replace the 2 (large and small) inner breather-housing-to-cover gaskets while you're in there. I ordered them but after I got in there it really didn't look necessary so they're on the way back to Atlanta, GA.

    Cheers! 8)

Re: Any tips on replacing shift shaft seal ? - NEED HELP!

Well I got my forward controls mounted last night & it looks like I've got a problem. The shifter is binding so I must've messed something up when I was in there. I'm gonna' pull it apart here in a couple hours and see if I can figure out what's causing it but ANY advice would be very much appreciated.

It feels like it clicks into first but then can't find neutral and only sort of get 1 up. Then when I roll the bike forward or backward it seems to pop out. I haven't started the bike yet and have been pretty careful when playing with the shifter so as not to cause any damage to the internals.

there's some springs on the ratchet that moves the shift drum compare yours to the book. if you tilt the bike to the right you can get the cover off without draining the oil. once you watch it work a few times, you'll figure it out

    Thanks Polock!

Turns out it's probably not as bad as I thought. It's not actually binding, it's just reversed. I have 1 up and 5 down. Not sure how the hell I pulled that one off but what's the remedy? I'm gonna have to wait until my buddy can come over and hold the bike up with it leaning to the right while I do the ol' switcheroo!

Thanks BigFitz - you da man! I thought about that too.. just have to see if I have enough clearance around the YICS cover.

Here's what it looks like now.. this is the way it SHOULD be, right? Which means it's flipped internally, is there potential for damage to the internal shifter components if I just flip the linkage upside down?

    * Yeah - looks like I need a little more scrubbing on the ol' undercarriage!

Hey, I like the way you think man!!

Just went for a 15 minute ride to try it out & "smoke in" the header wrap. It doesn't take long to get used to it. For the sake of pure laziness I'm thinking I might leave it.

If you end up wanting to "fix" it, you don't have anything wrong with the internals. You'll need to either rotate the shift lever at the shaft by 180º, or move the linkage at the pedal to the opposite side of the pedal pivot (also by 180º).

Yep, exhaust wasn't too terrible - worst thing was I ordered the exhaust header crush gaskets from ebay (sorry chacal! ). They sat on my workbench for 3 weeks & didn't realize they sent me the wrong ones until I went to put the pipes on. I was soooooo pissed!! Thought I was gonna' be sidelined for 3-5 days waiting on new ones but luckily found some here in town at Competition Cycle (those guys rock - saved my ass!)

Definitely down for a ride this week if the time is right!
