Maxim X Questions Re Fuel System Cleaning/Repair

Be gentle I'm a newbie.

I've been searching around the forums and have found some helpful info. My BIL is getting rid of his 1985 Maxim X 700. It has low miles (under 4000), but was only ran once about two years ago and before that it had been sitting for 15 years. He believes the fuel tank has rusted inside and to say the least the carbs are gummed up, etc. The bike was stored in a garage under a cover and still looks real good.

I'm new to cycles but have some mechanical abilities, I can easily rejet a Honda Generator for high altitude travels, but this cycle thing has me concerned. I want to take the bike, but I'm hesitant due to the Maxim being a rare bike and parts not readily available. But with the low miles I'm thinking I can get my first bike up and running for a reasonable price.

Any estimates on repairs done at a cyle/dealership for the carb work, and looking for a used fuel tank hasn't been successful as of yet. Will any Maxim 700 tank fit, or does it neet to be a Maxim X? Are there tanks from other models that may work? Best place to get carb rebuild kits if I decide to try it myself. I'm not certain of the exact model designation and not sure if I'm looking at the proper info when searching for parts, at Partsbarn etc.

Just a few of the ??? in my head at this moment, with certainly more to come.

Welcome dayooper! I actually have an XJ700 Maxim X as well and I can tell you it would be well worth the effort to get that hottie running! Plus the help you can get on this site is unsurpassed!

The model designation can be found by getting the VIN number off the steering head; that will make it easy to see exactly what model it is.

As for the more technical stuff, there will be plenty of people through shortly that have much more knowledge than I do.........
