    Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose...today I won! I replaced my stock turn signals with Motrax micro diamond indicators, pics to follow later. Anyway, my flasher relay went out and it must be from age or incompatability because they use a filament type bulb like the stock ones but are a different type. I looked in Bike Bandit and they wanted almost $73 for it and that doesn't count the shipping. 8O Because of the price and maybe the same kind wouldn't work either, I went to Advance Auto and wanted to try my luck and purchased a Tridon Slant, variable load, heavy duty extended life flasher unit / part# EL13. The prongs fit the connector on my bike perfectly but I had to switch the wiring around because the new flasher configuration was different but...it worked! :D Total cost, Ten bucks!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!

    I just replaced my machanical flasher with an electronic one last week and it was only a couple bucks at a fleet farm store. Now I can use LED signal lights. No matter what kind of after market lights you run, the flash rate stays the same. It was one of those "what-the-fu<k" moments.

    Here are some pics of the flasher unit, for those who may need to spot one on the shelf when ever in need. Seems to be of good quality and heavy duty like the OEM part.

    The wire colors go to the prongs as follows:
    X ----> Br (brown)
    P ----> G/Y (yellow w/ green stripe)
    l -----> Br/W (brown w/ white stripe)

    Hey man Thanks for the tip!
    My blinkers now work!!!

    Got mine at Canadian Tire, looked exactly the same as the one you have shown and, get this, was the CHEAPEST out of the electronic flashers.

    I bought the most expensive one first, thinking it was safer - but had to return it for that one!

    Very happy.
    Thanks.

    It's probably a sealed relay unlike the old ones which are exposed to the elements

    So with this relay it doesn't matter what size bulbs I run?

    Nope, big or small they'll blink!
    I'm not using LED's and I have the same relay.

    You just loose the auto-cancel feature... Which I didn't ever notice working before I swapped relays...

    And you can still use the stock connector, just pop the wires out and switch em... plugs right in!

    I just zip-tied the new relay to the frame.

    Why isn't this thread sticky?

    I have a spare canceler. I think I will open it up and find out how it works. Might be able to get it working with the electronic flasher.

    I'll bump this for a great replacement!

    I bought a flasher on ebay and had it mailed home. I then made the wire leads and labeled them as Scrape described and mailed them home. My dad plugged in the flasher and my lights worked. Now when I go home to pick up the bike I can get it inspected without worrying about trying to get the lights working first. Thanks Guys!!!!

    Hey Scrape,
    Thanks for the picture and the wiring description. I bought one relay that didnt work then found one that looked exactly like the one pictured and then that didnt work. Looked at your wiring and saw the brown/white and yellow/green wires were reversed so I switched them and now it works.

    Thanks for the thankies everyone! :)

    I don't even have my XJ anymore...with regrets...but an old thread lives on to save others from undue trials with their bikes. I'm glad that I could make a worthy contribution to the forum and also not "ghost ride my bike into the river" either. LOL It's kind of strange that I decided to lurk about this morning and see this thread without having subscribed to it. I came back to this forum to trade some stuff a few weeks ago and by chance just clicked on here and started to read some threads out of boredom. Many things learned here apply to other bikes also and this forum is packed with good info and a helpful membership sharing their experiences. I'm sure that if you made other good info here like this thread a sticky, you'd probably have pages of stickys cluttering up the place. Maybe someone could write up a FAQ sometime to include this information. I made a good title for the thread anyway to help those in the search mode find it easily.

    I credit most of my flasher relay information and results to luck and desperation. Believe me, it was a shot in the dark accomplishing this task and by no means was it done with a vast knowledge of electronics. I'd feel a lot better about this contribution if it was skill that made it possible. I expected to possibly see some smoke trying this stunt. LOL I felt like MacGyver (old TV show) after I got my turn signals to work. MacGyver probably could have done it cheaper by using paper clip or something carried in a womans purse.

    will this electronic flasher keep led lights on all the time, then flash when necessary? Right now my leds only go in when I flick the switch.

    alright I just bought my first bike and its an 82 maxim 750. I went to replace the bulbs in the gauges b/c they were burnt out. Afterwards, my turn signals come on but don't flash, but if I play with the wires behind the headlight they will flash which makes me believe the flasher is fine. any ideas? or how about a wiring diagram??

    Hey XJ750 did you ever get your issue figured out. From the sounds of it to me I'd bet there's something shorting out in your bucket making the lights just short to always on? Then when you play around you break that short?

    I'm no expert like some of the other guys on here, and have been in and out of this page to work out my own turn signal gremlins as well! BTW that flasher at advanced auto is still 10 bucks 3 yrs later and worked like a charm! Thanks for all the great info Scrape, even if it was just luck. It was a life saver.

    Wesley,
    I'm not sure which bike Scrape used this mod on, but it will work on your 82 650. That's what I'm riding. I had real problems trying to pull the wires from the stock clip with my bobby pin tool... one came out with effort, one ripped :x :roll: , so then I said EFF it and cut them and put on some new female connectors to accept the relay. Wire it up just as described and worked like a charm! :D

    I have been tearing my hair out for MONTHS trying to figure out where my turn signal flasher was located. One picture shows near the battery, another shows under the tank, but they're all amorphous in saying exactly WHERE the thing is. Now, at least, I know which part to get: an EL13 flasher. Take the tank off, find my old flasher, and replace.

    So far I've repainted the bike (Duplicolor Metallic Blue Flake), rebuilt the starter motor, and now tackling the turn signals. This is a great bike!

    This is a great trick. I was working on my blinkers for a couple days now and i joined here last night and now my blinkers work. next step is to strip down my extra wiring harness so i can get rid of my busted up headlight and atari box.

    if it is other signals you want. (prob gonna catch hell for this) go into the flasher and bend the floating contact up and down till it works. Doesn't take much of a bend. Got ninja turn signals on the 550. otherwise great part to know of if i need to replace it.

    We have had a sharp increase this year in MC/car collisions... I decided to put a 'zero load' flasher on my brake light. cost $12. [basically a variable load flasher] SO now my brake light blinks whenever i use the brakes. Local motorcycle cop stopped me and told me it was a good idea! A steady red light means the same as a flashing red light, at least in Oregon.
    Next project: oscillating headlight

    Sorry to Jump the topic on this thread.

    Alot of these Law's are so outdated and need fixed!

    I myself seem to notice Modulating Headlamp's and Brake lights More then steady Burning ones and the Laws should be fixed to allow such Mod's to be done to our Bikes In my opinion.

    According to the Washington State Patrol (WSP) brake light flashers/modulators are not permitted by federal code. WSP cited the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 (49CFR571.108).

    I think this section
    S5.5.10 The wiring requirements for lighting equipment in use are:
    (a) Turn signal lamps, hazard warning signal lamps, and school bus
    warning lamps shall be wired to flash;
    (b) Headlamps and side marker lamps may be wired to flash for
    signaling purposes;
    (c) A motorcycle headlamp may be wired to allow either its upper
    beam or its lower beam, but not both, to modulate from a higher
    intensity to a lower intensity in accordance with section S5.6;
    (d) ((All other lamps shall be wired to be steady-burning.))

    It's sad Washington state adopted the Federal law. which happens to be the state I reside in.

    I have said it before but a lot of the headlight modulators screw with my eyes and I nearly ran off the road once because of them. I would be happy if they were illegal everywhere.
    I do like the brake lights that flash once or twice then go on solid.
