Hi there, I'm new here and this is my first bike. I have a 1982 550 Maxim and I just bought the mechanical tach cable because the bike came without it. My questions are: Where does the tach cable screw into the valve covers? Right now there's a hex bolt in the way. Does anyone have pictures so that I make sure I don't screw it up? How do I get into the tachometer gauge housing to replace the bulb in it? I think it may be burnt out. If you guys could help me out here, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks.

On the blub, the chrome is held on by four screws at the back of the meters. Remove them and slide the chrome off and guide the wires out of the holes. You will see the rubber sockets for the bulbs at the back of the inner meter case. Just pull those out and change the bulb. It takes a 194 wedge type. Check out seedyrom gallery for pics on how.
The tach cable problably goes where you see that hex nut. It would leak oil without something in it. The tach cable gear is on the right side near the center on the front of the engine.
