ok.. why? Brakes

Ok, why isn't my rear brake working, i know that it has to do with my rear brake pedel, this happened before, i had a shop fix it, and now i want to fix it myself, its the spring and thats all i know, can someone help me out please?? how do i fix this.. thank you!

 

Ok, first you need to provide some details beyond what little you provided. Pictures would be most useful and some idea what it is or isn't doing (no pressure, pedal travels through the travel area without contact) and how long it has been this way.

ok whats happening is the pedel is not springing back up, it just stays down once pressed, when i took it out around the block, it felt like i had no rear brake at all, it seemed like i was standing on it and nothing would happen.. the last time, they told me that it was a spring, that was not tight enough.. i'll get pictures up as soon as possible

 

Coastie sent me some pix of what she's dealing with.

It looks like the Pedal is loose from the inside. I can see the shiny journal that needs to be pushed back into the bearing bushing.

The fastener on the inside of that pivot came off and let the whole thing shift out.

If anybody is up there in her neck of the Great Lakes ... do the right thing!

 

Be weary, I lost my brake lever to a loose bolt once. God alone knows why it chose to fall off on the off-ramp in a blaze of sparks (thus alerting me to it's departure). Of course the first thing you want to do when you see something wrong is stop. That was the second sign that something had departed, no brake! After an uneventful front brake only stop, I walked back up the ramp, found my lever and put it back on. The bolt was still threaded in! Loctite and a torque wrench from then on baby!

 

Here's a pic of parts blow up.

Number 4 is the brake pedal shaft, it's attached to the brake pedal and needs to pivot freely thru the bike frame. I would remove, clean, inspect, and grease up this shaft. Spring # 5 and spring # 12 as well as the brake hub parts all assist in pushing the pedal back.

 

I'd guess that her bolt holding the pedal into #-4 is missing ... because the machined surface on part #-4 is visible in the photo.
