I cleaned the carbs today. When I tore them down the long needle was jammed in two of the carbs I pulled it out and put it back in the plastic round piece. I'm just wanting to make sure this was ok to do. I Put it back just like the other 2. I guess it was stuck from just sitting. Also will I have to sync the carbs with a vacc or merc guage. Or can I just sight set them(or however you do it) btw how do you do it lol.

Well that should be fun. Don't think I'm gonna do the swap till winter. And I may just end up finding someone to do this. I found a guy that will rebuild and sync for 200 Dunno yet though

So is it ok that the needle had come out of the plastic holder?

Do you mean the holder in the carb slide? It should have been held in by a plastic allen head bolt with a spring under it.

    OK added a picture ;)

You can see the tube Rick speaks of here. Make sure it is properly back in place, not going to just fall back out, and the same "length" as the good ones.

All the carbs components need to be really really clean. Not advised to split them off the rack though

It's OK to push the Needled back in place. Thats how they are inserted in the holder ... pressed in.

But, if they were stuck so badly in the Emulsion Tube that they pulled-out of the bottom of the Diaphragm Piston ... you need to extract the Emulsion Tubes and Overhaul them.

Those Emulsion Tubes are supposed to be absolutely free of contaminants.
That their inner section was fouled enough to hold the Needle securely enough to be pulled-out from the Piston means they are severely clogged.

The Emulsion Tubes have as many as 18 -to- 24 tiny Fuel Metering Ports drilled through it. If those tiny Metering Ports are clogged with evaporated fuel contaminant, each one will need to be unclogged for the Carb to supply the correct Mixture supplied by the Main Jet.

Measure the length of a Needle that didn't pull-out and set the ones that did to that exact length.

You have to remove the Main Jet and washer to push-out the Emulsion Tube through the top of the Carb body.

The emulsion tubes are pushed out from the float bowl side after the main jet is removed correct? So they will fall out the top of the carb?

They can be pretty stubborn about wanting to come out. You may have to drive them out of the carb body.

Find a bolt with threads that match the Main Jet.
Screw the bolt in the bottom of the Emulsion Tube and tap it out with a hammer.

Where can i purchase new emulsion tubes? I cant seem to locate replacements anywhere. I recently bought a XJ650 that sat in a barn for the past 6 years with fuel in it so the carbs were a mess. One of the main jets crumbled while trying to remove for cleaning leaving its threaded part inside the emulsion tube. Anyone has any ideas?

    Don't panic.

It will come right out after you get the Tube OUT. Soak the Tube and its likely to fall out. It will come out with an extractor.

You don't need New Emulsion Tubes. The ones you have are good for LIFE.
    They are Solid Brass.

Clean-OFF the Outside by scrubbing it with a ScotchBrite Pad.
(Wanna save some time ... Buy a Cap Screw that has the right thread pitch. Cut the Head off it ... so you can chuck it in your drill.

Spin them and clean the outside with the ScotchBrite Pad as you use your drill to save time.

Clean the INSIDE by twisting three Extra-long Pipe Cleaners together ... nice and tight!
You can get the Pipe Cleaners at a Craft's Store.

You only need a new Jet. Look on the Top of the Jet. Order that number!

    Keep on truckin', bro.
    You're gaining on it!

Once you extract the Emulsion Tubes ... you have to Clean-out and Flush BOTH the Emulsion Tube and the Main AIR Passage.

The Brass Emulsion Tube will Shine-up on the Outside easy enough. The Inside needs a little scrubbing with tight-fitting Pipe Cleaners.

Then, ... You need to be able to "Sight" through the LONG Passage AND ~>All the little Metering Ports drilled through it.

There is a Tool on a Welder's Tip Cleaning Set ... that FITS the tiny holes all around the Tube.

You poke the Tool in one side and shove it out the other side ... clearing-out TWO Holes at a time.

After the EMULSION TUBE is all Perfectly Clean. Flush out the Main AIR Jet feeding that Emulsion Tube Chamber.

The Main AIR Jet is up in the Top ...
    Take-out the Diaphragm Assy
Remove the Curved Cover Plate (if so equipped) exposing TWO Air Jets.
The Jet with the LARGE Opening is Pilot AIR
The one below it with a SMALLER Opening is Main AIR.

Blow Carb Cleaner through the Jet and LOOK for it to spray out of an opening on the inside of the Bore where the Emulsion Tube fits.

(Never hurts to do the Pilot AIR Passage. But with the Jet and the Mixture Screw in-place ... the Cleaner hasn't got a Exit)

What size Main Jet do you need?
