So, I've got my MC road test tomorrow. I went out riding this morning to practice. I decided half way through my ride to fill up with PREMIUM! Why, o why??

Bike started running a little rough. Brought it back home. Decided to resynch and colour tune. Things went from not so bad, to what the hells going on. It would start if I held my head just right and had the choke in the right position, and gave it just a little throttle...for a while. Couldn't vaccume sync, so I decided to bench synch. Then it just wouldn't start. Pulled plugs. Wet. Dried plugs, and turned throttle adjustment all the way out. Still not starty.

Checked bowl level. Every carb gushing like old faithful. Just about ripped my carbs apart to reset float levels, when I though there's no way all of the floats could have fallen out of adjustment. Yes, that's right. Premium fuel is a different beast where buoyancy is concerned. Ripped down to the gas station to get a jerry can of REGULAR. Drained bowls and lines. Voila, levels back to normal.

Just eating supper so I haven't got it running yet, but I think my problems are solved.

    Two lessons learned:

First, don't experiment when time is a issue.

Second, if you decide to go with premium gas for what ever reason, expect to recalibrate your float bowls. I'm still a little astonished that the buoyancy is that different between 90 and 94 octane.

There you go. Now I've got a bike to get running.

First time I've ever heard of that.... I can put any grade of gas in my bike and never had problems related to the floats.. I usually use 89 just because my bike idles better on it than 87, but AFAIK our bikes are actually designed to run on regular and get no benefit from higher octanes. The compression isn't high enough to require anything higher. But I've never heard of it affecting the floats..

That's what I heard as well (regarding the octane), but I thought I'd give something different a try and see what happens. BTW the bike is running, and I'm just stepping out to take if for a test ride.

Perhaps my floats are really sensitive, or the gas up here is different than in other places. But going back to regular solved my float level problem. Weird.
