Hi there folks. Having dealt with a crankcase full of fuel. now cleaned, drained, and oil filter replaced having even snapped off nut for filter cover, drilled out, replaced..... Replaced the petcock. Now the problem is fuel is still making it past the needle valves in one of the float chambers and spewing out of the air box. And causing running issues of course.
Do the needles deteriorate? harden and no longer seal? Are the floats old and no longer bouyant? hence not sealing fuel flow. Do I need to replace needles and floats? If so does anyone know where to get new ones?
    Thanks from Simon - '82 Xj550 owner

Yep they go bad! You can get them at Old Bike Barn. Link:

However , for fuel to be filling the carb and then spilling into the air box means there is a flow of fuel. If the petcock is on PRI setting then turn it to ON. Remove the fuel line and insert in into an empty coke bottle or some appropiate container and see if fuel is flowing with the petcock in the ON position. If so then the petcock is not sealing. With a new petcock I would suspect some tank crud is getting into it. Pull it and clean it well and check for a torn diaphragm.
If you are checking the carbs with the petcock in the RES position then pull and rebuild the carbs. You can but only the float valves which I believe is al that is needed. The float seats can be cleaned in carb dip along with the main and pilot jets along with the choke plungers and emulsion tubes.

I would hesitate before replacing the floats, I think those are expensive, and all they really need to do is float! So check them.

I believe that the actual needle valve is USUALLY what is the problem with excess fuel. I was surprised when I took my old needles off and showed them to the local shop. They looked fine to me, but just the fact that there was a shiny ring on the rubber needle was enough for them to be declared unfit for service.

I believe they are cheap, and it is something you DON'T want to tear apart the carbs twice for, so I would recommend just go ahead and replace them! I didn't replace the seats on mine though because they are metal, and the needles are rubber, so the seats shouldn't really wear.
