Put a freshly charged battery in my '82 Maxim 650 today. The bike turned over, but didn't start ( the bike has endured many a garaged New York State winter). Repeated attempts to start the bike were futile,as the pushing the starter button resulted only in an almost inaudible click. I jumped the the relay (at least I think that is what it is),that is located behind the battery on the right side of the bike.Took a while, but it did start (bike has always been colder than Leona Helmsley was) . Last year the bike would cut out, without warning, the headlight would flicker ,and the electric tach would not register rpms. This didn't happen a lot,but was frustrating none the less. Also.there were a few times when I started the bike, and the headlight wouldn't come on for 30 seconds or longer. When all goes well, the bike is DA BOMB,but it kind of kills the image when you have to park at the top of a hill to insure that you can restart the bike...

    Thanks guys
    Dan

Sounds like you have a bad connection somewhere. I would start by checking the resistance in the battery wires first. I had a corroded positive terminal end that did just about the same thing you are describing. When I finally got sick of it acting up, I pulled the cables and when I went to clean them, found one was so corroded at the wire that when I folded it to clean it, the connector fell off in my hand.

when you turned on the key did the nuetral light and turn signals work? if so it could be your solenoid if you have to jump it to get it to turn over. also sounds like the carbs need a good going through, and other electrical fixes.

The fuse box is a new aftermarket item, although I wasn't privy to the XJ Bikes braintrust when I replaced it,so they are the glass tupe type fuses (DOH !).The connection issue seems to be very possible, capy. I'll check that out.Thank you SO much for your suggestions, folks!
