My mufflers were rusting out on my bike. I couldnt find a reasonably priced exhaust so i went on ebay found a used pair of harley mufflers with heat shields for about 30 dollars i think this is the original part number, 65896-95 include chrome covers. I then went to a car parts store and bought a 12in piece of 1 3/4" pipe. I cut off the old mufflers and welded a 2 inch piece of the 1 3/4 pipe so the new mufflers slipped right on. I still need to make a new bracket to go from the mufflers to the original muffler mount and make a bump stop for the kick stand. The rest of the pipes didnt look to great so I covered them with header wrap. It looks so much better then the original and sounds just as good. Sorry about any conffusion. I am going to try and post some pictures and keep in mind I still need to clean a few things on the bike but it still looks darn good. Enjoy

I've got similar pipes on my bike actually, though mine came with it and are in some seriously rough shape. Looks good. Have you fired her up yet? I know that the guy who put the pipes on didn't adjust the carbs at all, so that had to be done. But they sound amazing haha.

I used a pair of Harley Screamin' Eagle mufflers on mine, but were too loud. They fit alright and looked nice, but I have to use large washers inside them to quiet them down when I run them.
The stock mufflers off of a sportster should be about perfect on these bikes. There are tons of them on Ebay for cheap $$.

And here I thought I invented that. A freind of mine gave me a set of stock Fatboy pipes and I did a similar thing on my last project bike, a '78 Suzuki GS 750.
The PO had put a set of Vance & Hines 4 into 1s on the bike and then laid it over totaling the muffler. The headers were also rusted by the time I got the bike so I sand blasted everything (Harley muffler included) and powder coated it satin black. I used a 3/4" hole saw to open the muffler up a little and it sounded great.
I know the muffler was never intended to go as fast as it would on the Suzuki, but it has held up well and looks pretty good.

I put a set of HD mufflers on my 82 Maxim. I got them off ebay for $25 practically new. I had to make custom hangers for them but they fit the collector perfectly.

Justice,
Are those stock mufflers with the baffles still in them? How do they sound?

I see, thanks!
No your not going to get a Yamaha to sound like a Harley, that much I'm sure of (unless you have a V-Star)
All I ever wanted on mine was a little "throaty" sounding anyways. Loud mufflers on an XJ is just too annoying for me.

I will second that!
Justice,
When are you going to add yourself to the XJBikes Map?
Heres the link

I am wondering which side of H-Town you are on.

Does anybody know of a way to replace or preferably relocate the factory stand stops that were on the muffler. I am currently just being careful when I let them up and resting on the muffler. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

AMCwood,
I was wondering what others done about the center stand stop myself!
What I did was mounted a short piece of flat stock, about 1" wide to the bottom muffler bolt and used a large rubber washer (about 1/4" thick) on the other end of the strap, for the center stand to hit when I flip it up.
You can also make one with an L shaped piece of flat stock and use any kind of rubber on the bottom (so it doesn't "bang' when you flip it up)
I think I seen someone use some kind of rubber from a door stop on his bracket. You don't actually need any rubber, but I did because I had it here already. PD

Will ANY Harley muffler fit on the 1982 650's?
