Title: Gas mileage
Description: How many miles per gallon do you get?

jpentz - June 4, 2005 04:08 PM (GMT)
Hello all:
I'm new to the forum.

I've been searching for an XJ forum for some time (about two years).

I'm glad this one available.

I have a 1982 Maxim XJ750J. When I bought it it had about 8,500 miles on it. It hesitated when I rolled on the gas. It got about 45 miles per gallon :) (which seemed about right after searching the Internet and finding others posting about the same mileage).

I had the carbs removed and professionally cleaned (de-gunkified). The responsiveness became wonderful. Roll on the gas and go - no hesitation.

The gas mileage dropped to 36.

What gas mileage do you folks get?

I have an XJ650

Im not sure of total fuel capacity but last year whenever I hit around 100-110 miles I was flipping to reserve...

I to have an xj650. She has 28.6k miles. 3.5k I have put on there

I get about 125 miles to 3.5 gallons, I know for sure because I once ran her dry with the reserve on. I was blessd that day because just as she died I turned into a station off of the freeway and litterly rolled up to the gas pump LOL
I figure on the freeway I'm getting about 35mpg and in city it's about 29mpg. I think my carbs need some adjusting because it should get better mileage and I doubt it has been done in years! Although she starts easily every time, runs very well and is very responsive. I don't really know for sure I'm not an expert by any stretch of the term. In fact I have yet to do much to my engine. I have done lots of work on the tank, brakes, forks, electrical and so on, but frankly the engine intimidates me LOL

My 82 XJ 650 got from 40 to 49 mpg, depending on wind, speed, etc. Best mpg figures were before I learned how much fun 6000+ rpm was. On my XS 1100 the range is 30 to 35 mpg, depending on the mix of local and highway driving. Best to date is 34.9 on a 100 mile 2-lane trip @ 65 mph.

I just returned yesterday from a 2 lane trip of 761 miles and averaged about 45 MPG. That was with at least 60 miles at over 100 MPH, and at least another 300 miles at over 85 MPH. The rest was 65-75 MPH and some in-town stuff.

My buddy with his brand new Z750 had a really hard time keeping up with my "old" Maxim X..... B)

I am getting about 50 mpg on my bone stock seca 550. Lots of freeway miles at 75 to 85 mph and the occasional blast through the canyons :P

I'm not too sure about my last Seca, but my first one got around 40-45mpg stock.

Fast forward to the point that I zebra stripped it ;) 810 big bore> Vance&Hines> pod filters> and jet kit... I managed about 30mpg, unless I was toying with the "new" Ninja (that usually dropped me into the 26-30 range).

my xj 11 gets about 32-35 also depending on how fast for how long.

I have a 85 xj 700 and get 110 miles before my light comes on.

Kace44mag - June 17, 2005 05:43 AM (GMT)
I have an xj700 1985 and get bout 150miles out of a tank

KTA - June 17, 2005 01:46 PM (GMT)
I get low 40's on my xj750.

I posted earlier my bike got 45 mpg before a major carb cleaning and synching. After it got 36 mpg.

Got my bike back from the shop. New Dunlop GT 501s, balanced, new brake shoes and pads, changed oil and filter, changed shaft oil, cleaned K&N air filter, told mechanic I thought it was running rich.

He told me the air filter was dirty and the plugs were fouled. Now I'm getting 39 - 41 mpg. :)

After a new set of plugs, new air filtre and a professional carb cleaning my 1985 XJ 750X gets an average of 33 miles/ imperial gallon when cruising on the highway at 100kph (60mph).
Not great for cruising long distances in the boonies, but I love my XJ. I've had it since 1999 and am the 3rd owner.

I haven't had a motorcycle for about 15 or so years. So I like to just start it up and then turn it off. Then I start it up and rev it a couple times. Then I turn it off. Then a few minutes later I do it all over again.

Keeping that in mind. I checked the mpg's tonight and I got 45 mpg. (XJ650J)

Last time I checked my 82 turbo, was getting 47mpg. If I ride it hard with lots of boost, mileage will drop to about 40

woot - August 11, 2005 01:45 PM (GMT)

I own a xj 650. It has a 10L main tank and a 3 L reserve tank. I get about 14 km/l (33 mpg) which takes me 140 km (84 miles) before reserve and theoretically another 43 km (25 miles) on reserve for a total range of just over 100 miles.

This mileage I consider quite poor, however, I'm 6 foot tall and with my jacket on a very very large sail. I ride without a windscreen and I expect that seriously reduces mileage.

Cheers,
woot.

1982 750, 25K miles on the engine. I regularly get 42 mpg with my mix (mostly highway) of driving. If I two-lane it at 50 mph, I can get 52-55 mpg. If I do all highway at 75 mph, I drop to 39-40 mpg. The dyno shows that my bike is running pretty rich at highway throttle, so I'll need to work on that this winter, which should dramatically improve mileage and power (3 mpg, 3 hp, I hope). That doesn't sound like much but at 15K miles per year, it adds up. $50 is $50...
My 1981 650 (both Maxims, BTW) with a V&H 4-1 exhaust (rest stock) runs me at about 36 mpg, but I twist that one a lot harder.
