Title: Choke adjustment

Natureboy - August 10, 2005 05:54 PM (GMT)
I don't think my choke is adjusted correctly. When I move my choke lever, it seems to drastically enrich the mixture but it doesn't step up the RPMs.

Can anyone help me understand how it should function, and how I can adjust it?

Thanks!

Dave

The choke on XJ's is not a traditional choke, it doesn't restrict air to enrich the mixture it actually adds fuel. So therefore the bike may not idle higher but will rather idle smoothly when cold. The "enrichment circuit" as we call it doesn't need adjustment. The cable may be adjusted but that is about all. When cold your engine should need a little choke on to keep running and need to be turned off after about 1 or 2 miles of riding. If your mixture is set right the bike will idle worse with the choke on when the engine is warm. If when the engine is warm, the choke causes an increase in rpm then your carbs are running lean.

Thank you so much. That is exactly what I needed to know!
