Title: New Poster
Description: Introduction
woot - August 11, 2005 01:41 PM (GMT)
Hey all.
I've owned a Maxim 650 for 4 or 5 years now. I'm from Nova Scotia, Canada. I saw another Nova Scotia poster when I read some of the old messages so hopefully I'll be able to join the physical maxim community as well as this virtual one.
I used to be a member of the XJOWNERS mailing list - but dropped off a year or 2 ago when I had email problems...
I am currently an admin at another online forum for ninja250's. I'm looking forward to seeing what goes on here and have a bit more to add/ask as I'm also a 650 maxim owner. I'll try to be quiet on the offering assistance front as I know how much that frustrates me when I'm an admin. If the admin's wish to contact me feel free to do so...
My maxim just passed 60,000km and I'm planning another 6000km for this month.
Cheers,
woot.

Wow so many maritimers it makes the head spin! :D Do you ride the baby ninja much?
woot - August 14, 2005 08:51 PM (GMT)
Are you a maritimer yourself?
No - I don't currently own a 250. The latest ninja I've owned was a 600r which shared alot of the same styling and handling characteristics. The 250 wouldn't want to lift it's nose, which is a good thing.
If I saw a 250 for sale at a decent price I'd consider it. They are an absolute riot to ride. You can ride them very hard and not be into the triple digits (in the measurement system of your choice). They handle very well with their very low weight, and the power they deliver is very easy to modulate. Something like 25hp at peak hp (around 13,000 RPM - redline around 14,000 and limiter near 15500).
So if you want to kill some twisties and have alot of fun, while still being able to keep your licence then the 250 is a good way to go. Besides, it humiliates the squids when you slap them silly with an "Underpowered girls bike" with a "lawn mower engine". :D
So currently I'm a one bike man - with no room for a second bike. Next bike is probably going to be something like a VFR -- although I've seen a number of good deals on BMW K series bikes. Other favorites would be a zx7 for nostalga, a 919 for fun, a TL1000R/S, a 250...
Acually one of the other bikes that has the same sort of cult following as the 250 (and for simular reasons) is the Hawk... funny how more than 10 years later suzuki has a smash hit with the same bike (sv650).
Cheers,
woot.

Welcome. Being a salt-water cowboy myself (born nfld, living in cowtown), I can understand the pride in owning an XJ. You just can't kill em. :)

Another one from the rock here Mr. Fork. Lived in Edmonton, Red Deer and Calgary for 10 years before moving to Ottawa late 2002. Burned a lot of gas in Alberta over the years with a couple of GS Suzukis and an immaculate 900 Seca I brought back from the dead. Kick myself all the time for not bringing it with me!

A proper geographical introduction:
Born in PEI, spent the first 13 years there... moved to Nova Scotia now living just outside of Halifax (20 minutes to the downtown core)
Graduated from Dalhousie, spent some time in Ottawa with the Coast Guard ( lol - I know there isn't a coast there to guard) and now back in Halifax working indirectly with the coast guard.
Woot.
A big shout out to all the Maritimers! (and a big shout out to everyone else... we don't want to exclude you from our silly reindeer games and we welcome you to come out and ride with us here. Lots of rides to choose from, and any length you want. A day, a week, an afternoon I'll lead/join a ride.

Hey woot - we met on the XJ Relay. I'm the guy who used the barbeque paint on my Maxim X. I'm the slowest bike fixer in the world. It's been in my shed for a full year and I'm still picking away at it. The handling was screwed and I started by chaning the steering head bearings. Then I got the engine covers off and broke some big stuff, lol. She'll be back on the road in the spring at the latest.
Nice to "see you" here.
Cheers,
John

I saw XJGurp and thought it must have been you - long time no see.
My bike is still on the road and sadly not as clean as it was back then... two winters in underground parking in the salty halifax air ruined the exhausts and dulled the alum. If you are the slowest bike fixer, I am the laziest bike cleaner.
I'm still in the area - lower sackville - when you have your bike on the road come on over and we can go for a ride...
I should do my head bearings - I get some delightfull wobbles - some of them from the rotor and some of them from the head bearings.
Good to see you again,
woot.

I'll definitely drop a line when she's back on the road.
Just got my left hand engine cover back and installed a brand new clutch boss. I broke the old one, stupidly. While trying to undo the 30mm nut I read to use a special tool, and I figured HA - fuck them - I don't need no special tool. SNAP.
Anyway - it's kind of fun or satisfying or something to pull parts off and fix them up and put them back. It can screw up the riding season, but it's fun anyway.
Cheers!
John
