Title: Got Bike - Got Questions

thedamo - March 9, 2005 04:19 PM (GMT)
I just picked up an 82 Maxim 750 and got it running. Cleaned out carbs, new plugs, runs great now!

Two questions:

1. The turn signal switch - turn signals work fine. Can't seem to get them to turn off though. Looks like a typical left, right, push off kind of switch. Am I missing something here? Is a spring inside missing or something? Could I rebuild switch or do I need a replacement?

2. The bike seems hard to move backwards. Goes from easy, to hard, to easy to hard, etc. Not the rear wheel since i moved that on the center stand. Possibly sticking at the front rotors? Odd since it pushes fine going forward.

Next on my to do list is the battery sensor bypass, and changing out all the rusted bolts!

Regards,
Damian

though i drive big brother (1100 maxim 1982) my signal switch you have to push it down to turn them off. Could be same no? :o

Yeah, it should be the same. Looks that way from the button too... just it won't depress. On other bikes the button pops up a little, and you push it back down to turn it off. I'm guessing that this is just broken.

My 650 maxim is a push in to off. It only off's easy from one side. I had apart in the past and couldn't fix what was wrong in the time frame I had. Can't remember what it was now.Had to have wires soldered for two people to test out on for license.
I had to change my front bearings last week for same reason. Mine takes two 6302's.

usualy just gummed up a little. take apart carefully! inspect clean and relube with dielectric lube. don't use wd40 it is petroilium based and will cause probs latter.

I also have an '82 yamaha xj650 maxim. Last summer my bike would go forward but wouldn't hardly go backwards. We took the calipers apart on the front wheel. The pistons on the calipers were sticking. We removed them, bought new o-ring seals and pistons, re-lubricated with grease and it works fine now.

I have a problem with the bike's rear wheel shaking at highway speeds above 65-mph. I checked this web site 5/4/03 and someone posted about the same thing. They said a possible cure was to replace the stock steering head ball bearings with roller bearing as well as lubricating and adjusting the swing arm bearings. They said to call Dennis Kirk 800-328-9280 for item #12-91. I just called them and checkd the part number and they said the part is obselote. Anyone else have any ideas?

steering head bearings can alot of times be found at local bearing supply stores.might even want to try your local good auto parts stores, (not pep boys or auto zone ) like the private owned type auto place were you can get profesinal sevice.just bring a sample or have the dimensions they should be able to help you out.

They have tapered steering bearing kit for $40 at partsnmore.com(xj650). Mid-summer I may convert mine and I will try to post Timken bearing sizes for others.

RE: turn signals

I had the same problem with my '81 Seca.
I fixed it by squirting silicone lube into the switch area and moving the knob all about.
That was spring last year...still worked good when put to sleep for the winter.
