Title: Replacement Tank for an 82 XJ 650 SECA
Hotswopp - September 12, 2005 12:49 AM (GMT)
Looking for a replacement tank for my running 82 xj 650. This was a daily rider for work until about 3 years ago. The tank rusted out and leaked all over my leg one night on a long ride home.. Nice chem burn for a while. I removed it and had it pressure tested and suposedly brasied and re sealed. This lasted about 30 days and cost a bit. The guy who did it said sorry better luck next time :( Got creative and tried to creame the tank, again lasted about 30 days. gave up as Yamaha via email told me $899.00 plus international shipping and 3 months and i could get a replacement. Flash ahead 2 years and a friend said he thought he could get a tank for it. So i gave it to him. flash ahead another year and some months and he still has it. Wife wants the garage cleared out so it is comming back my way. With the cost of gas lately i am again looking to get a replacement tank. Any help would be apreciated. I have a line on an 82 XJ400 tank off ebay for 5.00 i am not holding much hope but might get lucky. not sure if i should part this out as the parts for this bike apear to be very hard to find. the bike has 8 or 9k original miles on the engine, just lots of long periods of being parked in storage.
Thinking if i cant get a tank then i might try and part it out, and get some money for a down on something running and easier to get parts for. Any recomendations?
Thanks,
James

James try Bike Bandit.com i saw a new tank for a xj650 Maxim for 237.26. They should still have seca tanks too. When you get to the web site click on the OEM tab on the site. If they don't have your year 82 try 81 or 82 and other years. Oh yeah what is your bike's full name example XJ650LK this should be helpfull when looking. Tell me if this works out

Mine is a 1982 Yamaha XJ650RJ
I found one for a 1981 Yamaha XJ650LH for 237.00.. how would I find out if it would work. Mine is a Seca and it has sculpted sides on the tank, but I dont care about that part, I just dont know if there is anything else I dont know about.

Don't take my word for it but i believe that the 1981 Yamaha XJ650LH is a maxim model not a Seca but I do recall reading some where on xjowners that a maxim tank will fit on a Seca. Or it may have been that a Seca 750 tank will fit on a 650 Seca which would be nice on the behalf that there more Xj750 seca out there then 650 seca and the fact that it should hold more gas. The best way to get an answer to this problem would be to post a message in Tech Talk on xjowners someone should know the answer out there. Or keep looking on ebay. Or if none of this works you could always get the XJ Information CD that costs ten bucks.

My xj750 seca tank is up on ebay. I'm pretty sure it will fit the 650, I think many people put them on the 650's to hold more gas. Here's the link:

The L model might be the Midnight Maxim.
From what I understand the Maxim 750 tank (so likely the 700 as well) fits on the Maxim 650.
I doubt (but could be wrong) that the Maxim tank will fit on the Seca. You'll notice the Seca seat is significantly different, and that the tank appears to be longer and more narrow.
It is very likely that the Seca 750 tank would fit on the Seca 650, however, I have not tried to do this as I am not a Seca owner.
Cheers,
woot.

I think you are right. Also noticed that the Maximum tank apears to mount on the rear sides of the tank mine mounts in the rear center location.
