Title: What are the rims and engine made of?

Fropa - April 4, 2005 05:10 PM (GMT)
I've been working on detailing my new 1982 XJ650 Maxim and need help identifying the metal the rims and engine are made of. Most metal polishes seem to be very specific on what they shine so I don't want to use the wrong one and screw-up the bike. I'm fairly sure the rims are the originals and so is the engine. There not chromed, but are they Aluminum?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

I use a aluminum/chrome polish made by Solvo on my engine casings and wheels. It brings them up very well. It does mean that you have to keep polishing regulary or laquer the polished items. I prefer to keep polishing.

I've sanded my engine covers to 1500grit using WD-40 to keep it wet. Then polished them with Dremel and Mother's mag and aluminum polish. I am considering clear coating them.
Also metal is aluminum.

Thanks for the help. I'll look for a good aluminum polish and get to work on them.
