The shop is too cold without blasting through the propane, and my bead blaster keeps freezing up.
So to get my XJ fix I have been playing with rendering some 3D models.
Hopefully I will get some quality shop time Saturday when I can refill the tanks and get the temps above 38.
    Hope you enjoy the pictures

How do you get the models scanned into the computer?

I wish I had a 3D scanner; the parts are measured with traditional tools, calipers, protractor, and radii gauges.

Then the parts are modeled using SolidWorks. You can see tutorials on Youtube to see how the solids are created from a 2D sketch of the shape.

WOW... Thats a bit of work....besides the cool factor and such. What are you trying to do with modeling them?

Re: Hope you enjoy the pictures

Well my original thought was to model a complete XJ and offer the model as a supplement to the existing manuals. This idea is that you can take the bike apart in the modeling world before doing it for real. Also if you have a bunch of parts and can’t figure out how they go together you would have x-ray vision by reviewing the model, the viewing software allows making things transparent and or moving parts out of the way, and cutting section views wherever you like to look at the bike.

Unfortunately when I asked if anyone was interested in this technology the response was dismal. So now I am doing it to improve my modeling skills. I design large machines but the modeling is basic, mostly boring shapes steel tubes and plate shapes hydraulics and motors etc. you can see them at (nbe-inc.com) the motorcycle parts are more curvy challenging shapes.

I'd say that you have moved up from "Modeling", that is "Artwork"!!!
How long does it take you to do something like that?

If only SolidWorks wasn't so stingy when it comes to it's educational software...$200 a year for the school discount. AutoDesk gives a 3 year licence for FREE!
I'd be playing with SolidWorks in a heartbeat if I had a choice however. I like AutoCAD because of the command line but I will give SolidWorks its due, it is much better with 3D modeling. I have a nice engineer from my last job tutoring me on SolidWorks in my spare time.
I would LOVE to be able to turn out renderings like you do FlyGP, I'm sorry to hear that you didn't get the response you were looking for. Your pictures would be an awsome addition to the knowledge base and I know Chacal would love to have the dxf files for making new parts. Heck, I'd love to have them...

Wow this is absolutely amazing! My forks look exactly like that! Wish I had the aptitude to pull that off.

    Keep it up!
