Soo, I got the forks apart and cleaned. Ready to put back togeather with 15W40 but somehow I have no idea of the measurement on how much oil goes in!!!!! I had thought it was 9.24 fl oz's but not positive. Can anyone tell me the exact liters or millileters each fork requires???

    Thanks a bunch.

1980 650 G Maxim? Reading from the Haynes manual
    650 G, H, LH .. 262cc .. 9.24 US fl oz .. 10/30 motor oil .. 10w fork oil

I'd use fork oil and if your a larger chap or want to firm up th front maybe go to 15w. cc and ml are the same

    Yeah don't use motor oil.

Use real fork oil and I would likewise recommend 15W.

I've actually had good success using red ATF (Automatic Transmission Fluid) to fill forks. Really good on rubber seals, designed specifically not to degrade with cavitation, just about the same weight as fork oil. Had it on three of my fork rebuilds for several years with no issues.

ATF is about as thick as 9 wt fork oil. I use it to adjust fork oil viscosity (when the ideal is somewhere below the weight of fork oil that I have on hand), but it's too light of an oil to use as a replacement for fork oil on a 500+ pound motorcycle without ending up under-dampened. Now then, if you like the way that riding in a mid 70's Cadillac feels..ATF is perfect :D
