Actually there isn't much to get rid of, Don't know what the Law's says where your at, but over here there isn't much I can remove, so the stock harness is as small as it gets. (sure you can make it prettier but still the same amount of wires)

I can legally remove (from the electric system), and with legally I mean so it passes the MOT :
    The Tachometer
    The indicators (oil, neutral etc)
    Fuel meter
    Voltage meter

I HAVE to keep all electronic safety's , like the kickstand switch, the clutch-switch. And I have to have a calibrated speedometer.
Then you have the blinkers, headlight, brakelight etc that is required on all vehicles thats in traffic.

Sure you can remove everything BUT the wires to the engine (starter, timing, ignition unit etc etc) .. But the thing is, it doesn't get any better then the stock version. Bikes are really not full of crap add ons like cars, they're already minimalistic.

If you want less wires, then you need an older or simpler engine.

Use the colors on the wires to identify what goes where then?
The color codes are in the diagram I posted on top

Ahh I understand now. I noticed there is a full harness for a 1981 XJ550 on Ebay for 39 bucks with free shipping. I would start with that and remove items as needed.

    Check this out..

it looks like it comes with the regulator. You could buy it for the harness then re-sell the regulator for 20 bucks.

this is what i have done to my wiring. everyone says just get a wiring harness and just unplug stuff. well problen is im trying to also reroute where my connections are and eliminate stuff i do not need. so wiring harness sounds all good but its not what i need. and i assume this guy is attempting to do the same. Im not exactly sure if this digram is done correctlly but its what im shooting for for rerouting. Ill take any advice if i have done this incorrectly. yes my artfulness is sloppy

You hae a voltage drop somewhere. First thing to check is the alternator brushes.

So I followed your diagram to the best of my ability and when I turn the Key on nothing happens. What would be the first step to troubleshooting

starting your own thread with a link back to this one may help.
key has a wire from main fuse see if you have voltage from the fuse to the connector that connects to the key switch .
then there are wires that go back to the fuse box and to tail lights
not sure how headlight fuse is getting any power

black wire in that 550 diagram is shown as a ground to head lights ? from key no its hot so do not ground it. bad drawing
