I own a 750 SECA (11m) and I checked valve clearance but there seems to be two different views on the cam lobe position when checking the valve clearance:
    - according to the tutorial i found on that very site and the haynes manual the lobe should point skywards, 90 degrees opposite the shim
    - according to some other tutorial I read that the intake and exhaust lobe should be pointing to the exterior (opposing each others)

Now I'm confused because I don't get the same measurements at all when doing both method (basically second method gives me correct clearance and first one gives me tighter measurements).
So what is the correct way of measuring the clearance on a 1982 XJ750 SECA (11m) ?
    Thanx in advance.

Point the lobe away, 180*, from the shim and bucket.

like explained in a thread as "If you think of the flat surface of the shim on the lifter as being the x-axis, then the lobe would be pointing 90 degrees away from the x-axis/shim surface and be the y-axis. If you think of the stem of the lifter then you are 180 degrees away from the direction the stem goes when the valve is opened."
    Right ?
Sorry It seems I cannot insert a picture or link, I got a "spam error" and cannot post reply when I try.

    Mostly yes----
The lobe center axis will be dead parallel with the stem center line.

In a way he's correct. The nose of the lobe is pointed 180º from the shim face (where it would be pointed when the valve is af full lift). I dont think he's saying that the lobe nose should be 180º from the plane of the shim face.

I point the cam lobe AWAY from the shim when I am removing the shim or taking my measurements. It is a surefire way to make sure you are not anywhere near the slope ramp up or ramp down of the lobe. It ensures that the cam is at its short radius of the lobe.

print this, cut out the big circle, cut out the center circle, it should fit almost exactly on the ignition disk, get the first valve in position.
now line up one line with your pointer and tape or glue it to the ignition disk. when you do the next valve, just watch the lines
no more estimating, if it's on the line it's right
