I have a 81 XJ 750 Maxim (probably an 82 titled early - though it is a rebuild). The guy I'm borrowing it from mentioned that he wanted to do the drive shaft oil. I tried to find something here about that but have been unable.

Is there such a thing as changing drive shaft oil? How would I go about doing that?

There recently was a post about this.
Try doing a Google search . . . Type in XJBikes and Final Drive Oil.
For some reason the search engine here isn't as streamlined as we would hope for.

Yeah, it's located on the "pumpkin" on the rear left side of the bike. You'll see a nut on the top rear side. Not the vent on the top (round looking thing, don't touch it). Loosen the top nut and then loosen the nut on the bottom. Drain and fill just like a basic oil change. Fill only to edge of fill hole. Be sure to use a "Hypoid Gear oil 80w90. I change mine after riding for about 5-10 mins to get the oil hot so it drains faster, but that's just my personal preference. Hope this helps.

Perfect, thank you. I'll start using the Google search instead of the one on the site. I appreciate the help!

the manual recommends you change the gear oil with every oil change

But you don't really have to with the better gear oils we have available to us. The GL-4 gear oils that were originally used on our machines were in the transitionary period when lead had been removed from gear oil, but the sulphur additives of GL-5 caused our final drives more harm than good. I'm still giving some thought to what the change schedule for GL-5 should be, but every other oil change should be a conservative schedule. I may just send mine off for testing the next time I change it to see what's happpened to it over the past 6,000 miles.

I am using Redline MTL - my research indicates no risks.

No real benefit either. It's great in manual transmissions though.

Hey Guy's, I just Replaced a Seal in my final Drive and I'm having some trouble. Is there a Specific Pattern that you have to Bolt everything back together in or something? When I put it all back together it's not Seazing, but it's not spinning like it should. Anyone know what I'm doing Wrong?
