Tried searching, but couldn't find a "how to" on gutting stock XJ650 muffler pipes.

I was thinking of using a 3" hole saw on a drill to make a nice cut out on the back end of the pipe and then go from there. I think the small lip left might add some nice sound presence. I don't wanna go and cut without knowing how much of a PITA removing the rest might be. Anyone have a decent schematic of the pipe internals?

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I've got a set of 650 mufflers with holes drilled in them already. If yours are still bone stock and in decent condition, I'll trade you... I'd even gut them for you...

I don't need a dogs nose to smell your sarcasm...

    Sorry I asked. Thanks anyway.

??? Ok, I'm confused. No sarcasm was implied...
I'd just like to save a good set of silencers if possible. I am quite serious about swapping you for yours. I'll shoot you pics if you might be the slightest bit interested. The holes are drilled in the back plate, approximately three 1/2" diameter holes. I bought them in that condition (missed the holes in the photos the seller posted) and don't want louder sound. If this can work for you, all the better. I figure the holes would let you see the baffle system better. I know there is a perforated pipe running up in there but as to whether or not it is welded on the other end, I don't know. As for making the cuts, I have a full service machine shop available to make nice, clean holes that look good.

I doubt you would want mine. They had several small rust holes on the bottoms of them that I repaired with sheet metal.

Ah... sounds like they are good and ripe for hacking. Good luck with those and let us know what changes/improvements you experience.

Well, I didn't go nuts on it, but am pleased with the results I got. I took a 3 1/4" hole saw to the back of the pipe, then weaseled out the small center pipe with a pair of pliers. That way it left me a small lip I could weld a plate to if I didn't like it. I rechecked with my color tune plug and all is well. Very little change in back pressure, but a decent change in overall sound. Not overly loud at all. Quite pleased actually.

I'll post some pics tomorrow, and maybe see if I can get my camera to capture a sample of the sound.

    Zombie thread!!!!

    Back from the dead!

Cory, the guy who gutted his pipes hasn't been around for at least 4 years.
It is admirable that you are adept at searching this sight so well and finding archived information.
I would recommend that you start a new thread and add a reference link within it - it would probably prevent any frustration in waiting for a response that may never come.

    Something like this:
"Hey guys, I've been thinking about changing the tone of my pipes. I saw this old link about gutting them (http://www.xjbikes.com/forums/threads/gutting-stock-xj650-exhaust.27777/) anyone else try this or something similar?"
