Any tricks to flushing the coolant out completely from radiator, hoses, motor, etc?

I'm not sure what kind is in it, plus it's old. Would like to flush out the best I can and replace with new.

    TIA

    +1

I have to do this too. I jumped in here so I get notified once somebody posts.

I'm thinking you drain, refill with water, start bike, shut off, drain, etc etc until you get clean water, then just fill with a good 50/50 mix.

Same goes for me, I've looked around but have not found anything definitive, I need to change the o-rings on the lines coming out of the cylinder but haven't yet. Also I would assume we would use a Silicate free antifreeze solution due to the aluminum. any & all advice greatly appreciated

I stopped by the Napa dealer today and while picking up a thin walled 18mm socket for the spark plugs, I picked up a gallon (Maxim X takes 2.5 quarts from what I found online) of Peak Global Lifetime antifreeze. It's phosphate and silicate free so I figured it will do, and supposedly it can be mixed with any type of antifreeze, so I figured if I don't get it all out now I can get what I can and use this safely.

From the XJCD, owners manual for XJ700X........

    Changing the coolant
    a. Place an open container under the engine.
    b. Remove the radiator cap.
    c. Remove the drain bolts and radiator drain bolt.
    d. Drain the coolant completely and thoroughly flush the cooling system with clean tap water.
    e. Retighten the drain bolts. If the gasket is damaged, replace it.

    Tightening torque:
    Drain bolt – 8 Nm ( 0.8 m-kg, 5.8 ft-lb )
    Radiator drain bolt – 30 Nm ( 3.0 m-kg, 22 ft-lb )

    f. Pour the recommended coolant into the radiator until the radiator is full.

    Recommended coolant:
High quality ethylene glycol antifreeze containing anti-corrosion for aluminum engine inhibitors.
Coolant and water mixed ratio 50%/50%
    Total amount – 2.40L ( 2.11 Imp qt, 2.54 US qt )
    Reservoir tank capacity – 0.49 L ( 0.43 Imp qt, 0.52 US qt )
    From “LOW” to “FULL” level – 0.14 L ( 0.12 Imp qt, 0.15 US qt )

    CAUTION
Hard water or salt water is harmful to the engine. You may use distilled water if you can’t get soft water.

    g. Reinstall the radiator cap.
    h. Run the engine several minutes to recheck the coolant level in the radiator. If it is low, add more coolant until it reaches the top of the radiator.
    i. Fill the reservoir tank with coolant up to the “FULL” level.
    j. Reinstall the radiator cover and check for coolant leakage.

    Thanks Nick seems simple enough.

XJOregonian, Not bad for free, eh? I just wish it ran, hopefully soon. Need to clean some of the cob webs up after sitting for 19 years in my brother in laws garage.

    Thanks Nick!

I have the XJ cd's ordered, I'm waiting patiently for them.

Where are the coolant drain plugs? The one on the radiator is easy enough, but where are the other 2?

    Update as to bolt locations:

1 on the lower left of the radiator (12mm)
1 on the front of the left cylinder head (8mm)
1 on the front of the right cylinder head (8mm)
1 on the coolant pipe on the right side of the motor (10mm)

Make sure to take off the radiator cap to get air in the top of the system so it drains faster.

Mine is drained right now, going to flush it and re-fill this afternoon. My old coolant was a milky light green.

As they say........ That just ain't right!!!

Resurrecting this thread. It came in very handy, as I did mine tonight.

Piersol: your coolant was only milky *light* green? I must be doing it wrong... ye flipping gods, you should have seen what came out of my engine.

Oh, wait... I took pictures. Time for another How-To...

For future reference: funnels and/or long, flexible tubes for said funnels (the kind they sell for putting in tranny fluid) come in very handy. Unless you like spilling coolant all over the bike.
