I need to get to the bottom of my ignition switch to read the key code because I seemed to have misplaced my one and only key! I can't seem to find any how-tos while searching and my head is fried from tearing my house apart trying to find my $@^@ key to no avail.

I dont thnk that the code undeneath is going to be much help. I tried it then the dealer told me that i woukd have to take it to a locksmith and he wanted $125.00 to cut me a key.
The dealer wanted $175.00 for a new switch.
I found a new aftermarket EMGO switch for $29.00 on Ebay
    And it worked out great.
Or you can buy a used one for under $50.00 on Ebay

I removed mine on my XJ900 one month ago. I don't know if yours is mounted the same way, but mine had two bolts under the switch, accessible from one side and the other of the steering.

It was a pretty tight place , but I was able to use a ratchet wrench with the proper socket. You may need to remove your front fairing if you have one, and you may need to open the headlight to access the connector to the harness.

Once bolts were screwed out, I was able to remove the switch by pulling it down and out.

    Hope this helps.

Well the local lock Smith said my key code isn't in his books. Hes able to see codes around my series number but nothing that matches. He has the blanks and can make the key if i bring that ignition in for him to manually cut for $40. Waiting on the another lock Smith to call back.

Yes but at 30 and 20 its not logical to replace all my locks. The locksmith seems like a sound deal and hes walking distane from my house.

If you have a good locksmith close to your place, go with him. Removing the ignition switch should be pretty simple, actually.

Yep; in this pic it should be the big white connector that DOESN'T have a red circle around it:

As always, Thanks fitz. Lesson learned after this though. Getting spares made! What a headache.

Glad you have a affordable lock smith close by. Good news, shortly after you have the keys made you will find the mis-placed key. Your bike is still where you parked it last right? Done laundry lately? Roc

No, keys been tucked away for the long winter. Searched the house top to bottom!! I'm sure the key will turn up as soon as i get the new keys, but not a moment sooner! Ha

Triple AAA made me a key in less than 15 mins for my 2005 Dodge Ram Quad Cab last year while at Disney... He stuck a pin and felt the tumblers and then used a file and made me a key on the spot.. How cool was that ?
