I am doing a valve adjustment on a friends maxim x and since I'm not sure how the cams need to be set I marked everything before pulling the cam. The strange thing is that when I have the #1 piston up and the T lined up down on the crank the cam dots don't make any sense. The exhaust cam looks good, the DOT on the gear is lined up with a small mark on the cam cap BUT on the intake the dot is way off from the mark on the cam cap. It almost looks like 2 teeth off. Does this sound strange to you guys? The bike did run when he brought it here, not good but it ran. Carbs were dirty and valves were tight. But if it were mine I would change the cam timing on the intake cam so the dot was in line with the little bump on the cam hold down thing but I know it wasn't this way when I tore it apart. Should I leave it the way it was or change it to what looks to make sense?

    Get the Timing right.

Line-up the Timing Mark on the Crank.
    Install Cams
    Place Sprockets on Cams
    Install Dowel Pins
    Lube Bearings & Caps
    Arrows face OUTWARD
    Install Cam Bearing Caps --> EXCEPT == IN-3 & EX-3
    Tighten Installed Bearing Cap Bolts

    Install Sprockets
    Line-up the Timing marks
    "T" on the Crank.
Hold the Cams in Place using a Wrench and Assistant
Pull-up slack from Chain at front
Do Not Move the CRANK during Timing setting.

    Reset / Install Tensioner
    Release Tensioner

Turn Crank and Torque Sprocket Bolts
    Install IN3~EX3 Camchain Guides (Upper)

    OIL Everything

Turn Crank Counter clockwise several turns to check everything
Set timing marks for inspection that they are correct.

    Place Sprockets on Cams
Bolt Sprockets Finger Tight ==> (Only the 2 Holes with Punch Marks)
Rotate the Exhaust Cam to align the Punched Mark on the Cam with the "__"
Line Mark on the EX-2 Cam Cap

Force the EX Cam Clockwise to remove the Cam Chain Slack

    Place Chain on Intake Sprocket
    Bolts: Finger Tight
Rotate the IN Cam to Align the Marks on the IN-2 Cap
Force the Camshaft CLOCKWISE to remove the Slack

Insert Finger into Cam Chain Tensioner Hole
    Push Guide Inward
While Pushing Guide check ALL Marks

Remove the Intake Sprocket is Marks don't align
Change the meshing position of Sprocket and Chain to align.

where are the _ lines located? I have looked it over top and bottom and don't see any. All I see are the small o on the cam gears.

They are hard to see. I'll try to go out and take a photo.

I seriously doubt you could be off two cogs and not crash a valve into a piston.
Whatever you do, the first two revolutions of the crankshaft after you get the camchain on and tight need to be GENTLE by hand to make sure you got it right.

The marks on the gears have NO relevance. The marks on the cams need to align with the cam journals or caps (I can't remember right now)

Hey thanks a ton guys. I didn't even see the little dots on the cams. I was just looking at the dot on the gears. I just checked and with the timing mark on the crank set at the T the small dots on both cams are straight up 12 O clock. That should be ok them correct? Oh and number 1 cylinder is on the left side setting on the bike correct?
