Hi, I bought a 1986 Yamaha maxim XJ700 and it was running completely fine yesterday. Today when I went to start it, the lights came on but it would not even try to start. When I hit the starter button the fuel light and oil light came on but I know there is fuel in the tank and I just did an oil change on it as well. I used a multimeter to measure the voltage of the battery and its 12.56 so thats fine as well. I noticed that when I put the kickstand up it started up, do these bikes not start with the kickstand down? However when I put it up again today it will not even try to start. Could this be a problem with the kickstand switch? Any input is helpful!

    Thanks,
    Chief

It has to be in neutral to start with the stand down. If it is in neutral then yes it could be a problem with the switch.

Or the kickstand relay. It's under the left side panel and it's got a blue end on it. Unplug it and try it. If it starts then that's your problem

The bike is in Neutral, Wouldnt start. I removed the kickstand relay and it still wont make a single noise when I try to start it. I checked the ignition fuse and it looks fine.

The Fuel light is lighting up when I hit start, however I know there is an adequate amount of fuel in the tank. Is there some kind of killswitch that wont let the engine try starting if it senses theres no gas in the tank?

I first thought it could be the solenoid, but then I noticed you said the bike starts fine when the kickstand is up...

Sounds like you may have an electrical issue. If so this could be anywhere.

May be a dumb question, but how do I find the solenoid, where is it?

There are 3 different safety switches that could effect the starting. Neutral safety switch, clutch switch and kickstand switch.

Im pretty sure its the solenoid, ran a screwdriver over both of the poles and she tried starting, gonna grab a new one and hopefully that will finish that.
